Socialthing! blog : Ok, so yeah...it's true! We got acquired...

So, off all the people surrounding your growth, I have been probably the hardest on you guys. I questioned some of your motivations and actions. I pushed you hard to make decisions that were right for you and your users. I called you out when I thought you were making the wrong decisions. I did it because it was highly important you were the best. Of all the TechStars companies from 2007, you guys had done the best job of getting out in front of people, getting users, and getting people to talk about you. I wanted you to be better than you were, to be what I thought you could be. (Damn, that all sounds pretty condescending. I would suggest calling me out for that!) What I never did, was question the work ethic and what you were building (I hoped you moved a little faster and opened it up a bit), but the general concept of developing a way for me to interact with my social content from a single interface (which is the primary difference between ST and FF). And build something interesting you did. So, here is my mea culpa. Congrats guys. You deserve it because of your effort, and I am excited to see what you do next, personally and with AOL. Way to represent TechStars in a fantastic way.

Feld Thoughts : I Blog, I Tweet, But Why

alan, thats exactly the type of stuff that I am thinking of. For me, it was when I got a comment from someone I didnt know, or my daily traffic went over 10 visitors. Or, when someone emailed me about a post and how it made them think.

I still try and write as if the only person reading my blog is my mother and me, but I realize that blogging has become part of what I do and who I am.

My favorite description for that exact moment is: "Why you have an experience or thought, and your first thought is, 'Wow, that would make a good blog post.'"

not to belittle the post at all Brad, but I would imagine there are few folks that have blogged for 4 years and said, "man, this sucks! Its the worst thing I ever did."

So, I ask you, was there a specific moment where it moved from a "learning experience" to a "defining experience"?

Startup Weekend : I'm in it for The Spirit of the Game

I think you have sort of missed the point in comparing the concept of "spirit of the game" with "win-win" situations. Basically, the concept of "spirit of the game" centers around rule interpretation. In that certain rules have a bit of interpretation applied to them by the refs (or in a self refereed game, by the players), where the intent of the player is judged whether or not to be in line with the game. So, a player who intentionally acts in a fashion that is completely self-serving versus for the betterment of his team or the image of the sport, is judged as not acting in the "spirt of the game."

In business, the rules dont truly exist (other than what has become law). Rather, there are a set of ethics and unwritten rules that people act on. So, when a founder is pushed out, often there are clauses in the separation agreement that disallow disparagement of the company, with the penalty usually being loss of equity or payment.

Collaborative Divorce is born out of the same concept as no-fault insurance, where there is a direct attempt to circumvent the need for expensive lawyers, in cases where both parties are relatively agreeable to terms.

Within most businesses, the concept of win-win and co-opetion are difficult ones to really see in practice, because business, which is based in capitalism is predicated on the concept of have and have not. It is difficult to reconcile the concept of sharing and equality, where the need to win, means someone else has to lose.

I recently wrote a blog post about the difference between sales and business development called The Risk of Sharing (<a href="http://learntoduck.com/business/the-risk-of-shari..."><a href="http://learntoduck.com/business/the-risk...It " target="_blank">http://learntoduck.com/business/the-risk-of-shari...It speaks specifically to the realities (both benefits and detriments) of operating in a win-win construct.

My last thought is this, and one that you may want to explore. There is no specific definition of the "Sprit of the Game." Each game defines it individually. So Ultimate Frisbee (the non-sport) will define it differently than Lacrosse or Football. I imagine that individual businesses tend to do the same. After all, one can be as cut throat in Ultimate as they can be working at IBM.

VC Adventure : Is Facebook replacing email?

I so disagree. I am finding Twitter and FB better vehicles for communication mostly because there is less other noise than email. Take today for example. In a three hour flight between Denver and DC, I got 13 facebook messages (actual communications), 7 direct tweets and 78 emails (plus ~125 in junk). Its 11:30pm, guess which I dont check very carefully.

Any rhetoric and communications class will discuss the importance of reducing the interferance in ensuring that messages are 1) heard; 2) received; 3) acted on.

Email is almost a lost cause for me.

Colorado Startups : VideoBloom Grows In The Mountains

Doesnt that really depend on the focus of the company? If I want to provide video infrastructure versus an ad based system, then Video Bloom is going down the right path. If I want to be purely ad supported, then I need a mechanism to provide ads.

The primary issue with ads in videos today is nobody clicks on them. Therefore they are pretty much a pure branding play, which reduces their appeal.

That is very interesting. Is Ooyala a Colorado company? I also wonder what the best model is. For example, if $0.08/hr is doable if I suddenly get a video viral that explodes.

Either way, it appears that being a Saas/backend play is a much more effective business model than all other online video companies (other than YouTube).
