<description>Given that this is a San Francisco paper, the center of all things digital, this is pitiful. I thought newspapers gave up on this approach (imitating a print interface) about ten years ago when they realized that posting PDFs on the web was a dumb idea. $100/year for this? They deserve to go under if this is the best they can do. </description>

<description>I&amp;#039;d like to see an ongoing calculator somewhere that calculates the number of trees being saved by newspapers going online and no longer having print editions- it must be astronomical given that they published daily to millions of readers. </description>

<description>Actually to me Radian6 has the eye candy that agency types like but the functionality falls a bit short (I can say this now that I&amp;#039;m no longer with Techrigy!). The Flash widget interface makes it difficult to extract data and create reports for other people who do not have access to the app. Techrigy&amp;#039;s approach, while not as cute, is more similar to Google Analytics&amp;#039; interface and reporting capabilities. That&amp;#039;s the primary reason I&amp;#039;m using SM2 in my new business. </description>

<description>Good points Eric- keyword set-up is the toughest thing to get people up to speed with. We do a lot of handholding and monitoring of how people are using their accounts. It is a bit of a power-user solution though our customers are not techies, they&amp;#039;re marketing people. Lots of constant work on the UI. </description>

<description>We&amp;#039;re about as deep into sentiment analysis as anyone. In the past week we added Tone and Emotional Content analysis to our existing positive/negative sentiment engine. And we have a database of 1.2 billion social media conversations with up to 35 fields of associated meta data for each that drives our analysis, demographics and engagement tools. Adding around 10 million more daily. </description>

<description>It&amp;#039;s interesting- we&amp;#039;ve been monitoring the McDonald&amp;#039;s McCafe brand for a client and the sentiment is very strongly positive when compared to Starbucks. And I&amp;#039;ve been going to one of those new McD&amp;#039;s stores and I think it works. CNN, newspapers and a pretty decent banana smoothie... </description>

<description>I can&amp;#039;t imagine why they would invent this in-house when extremely well-designed social media monitoring tools like ours are out there. It&amp;#039;s not a simple thing to build nor will they have any historical data. For a few hundred dollars a month anyone could start this business and be up and running in hours. In fact, any local restaurant could use our free version with localized search terms and do the monitoring themselves. </description>

<description>First, RIM is a foreign company (CA) and they house the data in their own datacenters. That won&amp;#039;t fly. Obama&amp;#039;s people are already all Apple users. I&amp;#039;m guessing procurement is through competitive bidding so scratch the inside deal with Apple. My real question: What will Apple do with $28 billion in cash? That&amp;#039;s a lot of dough. And Microsoft&amp;#039;s numbers are very bad. </description>

<description>Brad, I&amp;#039;m a little confused. What if you sell software that cannot be replicated inside a firewall or on a desktop? Are you implying that we should offer a perpetual license in that case? I just don&amp;#039;t think its an either/or situation. And, in case it matters, we don&amp;#039;t sell into IT departments and we have never had a request for an alternative to a subscription model. It&amp;#039;s the &amp;quot;I need to own it&amp;quot; IT attitude that drives this discussion, not the market reality, IMHO. </description>

<description>As a marketer who works with a very limited budget I&amp;#039;d advise him to take one of our free accounts (he has a tiny brand so it will work fine) and start monitoring keywords like his brand and earbuds, etc. Set up Alerts and start responding to anyone who Tweets, blogs or mentions his keywords in social media. Offer samples to higher Popularity sources (they&amp;#039;re ranked in the app). The word will start to spread. Send him my email if you like- I do this everyday and we&amp;#039;re generating 30-40 highly qualified leads daily for a fairly expensive product. </description>

<description>For once Jeff I&amp;#039;m totally with you on this one- if you&amp;#039;re going to buy the technology, commit to the technology. Here in Rochester we have a terrible murder problem and cameras are making a difference both in prevention and apprehending suspects. The people in the neighborhoods affected (poor) are not complaining. It also helps resolve the terrible bias against helping police even in murders involving children and other innocent bystanders. </description>

<description>Intense Debate is acting weird today- it wouldn&amp;#39;t let me respond earlier, then resent your comment.&lt;br /&gt;All the car companies lobbied heavily against CAFE standards for years except Honda who went for fuel efficiency. The American makers also pushed big tax breaks for trucks that they applied to SUVs via loopholes.&lt;br /&gt;  The point is that many of these huge companies had no long term strategies.&lt;br /&gt;BTW, I rented a brand new Saturn a few weeks ago and it was a total piece of junk. The last Chevy I rented (in Detroit where it is not wise to rent foreign) had 1600 miles on it and when I had to hit the brakes hard on the freeway the pedal went all the way to the floor before they caught. It would take a huge amount of change to undo those impressions of purely shoddy workmanship. By contrast my 2008 Honda is perfect- and made in America of 90% American made parts. It&amp;#39;s not American talent that&amp;#39;s the problem, it&amp;#39;s shortsighted management and unions who will do anything to protect their power. </description>

<description>I worked in a fabulous old school bookstore for a year between high school and college in the seventies. It was a great experience but those days are long gone. The indie stores simply can&amp;#039;t carry the inventory necessary to compete, nor can they afford sales people who are widely knowledgeable about that inventory. At 18 I probably knew the entire inventory of a store that was the largest between NYC and Chicago. And I was making minimum wage. Today my equivalent is writing software or starting a business. Times change. </description>
