http://www.jeffnolan.com/blog/ : Memo to the Semantic Web

That's awesome Jeff! I got a good laugh and for the most part agree with you. I do see the benefits of the semantic web... my graduate thesis was on this topic SIX YEARS AGO and not much has changed (that says a bunch right there and validates your point).

However, recently there has been some progress. I think Alex and company at Adaptive Blue (and a few others) are doing a pretty good job of nibbling the elephant's rear end and actually doing something on top of this fuzzy notion of a semantic web.

Kevin Cawley Goes Mobile : Twitter Goodness on Your Mobile Device

Man, I take a weekend of skiing off the grid with the fam and my host upgrades their servers to Ruby on Rails 2.0.2. Good on them for getting the latest and greatest framework and bad on me for not being on top of that change :(

BTW, tried the quick and dirty method of forcing the app into an older version of rails but got no love... will fix ASAP.

We'll definitely be doing a RSS reader for Android. It may not be for a while - I wouldn't expect an Android powered phone to be on the market for several months.

Definitely feel free to pass along any ideas/features/etc you have in mind - kevinc at newsgator.

Nice! That's one way to avoid a technology... wait 'till it goes away :)

For whatever reason Flash Lite has never really gotten any traction. It's been on my radar for a couple of years but never enough to warrant a deep look.

Once, you get a good J2ME dev environment setup, it's not too bad. But it did take me over an hour to get the J2ME Eclipse plugin configured, working, and executing "Hello World" from what I recall. That was my experience anyway.

Neil did the same thing on his Mac in under 10 minutes - http://blog.opennetcf.com/ncowburn/2007/11/15/Fir...

Knowing Neil he actually did it in 5 minutes, while whipping up a new class in the Smart Device Framework, and didn't want to make me look bad :)

Your welcome... and I hope you build a killer mobile app for Android - I am excited about the possibilities w/ this platform too. At one point I was psyched about xhtml/wcss but then the iPhone changed that game up (for better or worse).

Let's see... here are some different "stacks" you can use to create mobile apps: SMS, MMS, WML/WAP, XHTML, HTML, Flash Lite, mobile Ajax, Symbian C++, .NET Compact Framework, J2ME, Palm SDK's, Brew, widgets(Widsets), Android, etc etc... not too confusing hey :)

Kevin Cawley Goes Mobile : Android - Google Becomes a Man

I don't think we'll see a Google powered device that is as stunning and as tightly integrated as the iPhone. Apple has a huge advantage on this front as they control the software and hardware. Android is just an OS and device manufacturers can build a wide variety of phones that are powered by Android.

What we will see is more device options across all carriers at lower prices . And these devices will run the apps baked into Android as well as killer apps that 3rd party developers create. The winner will be the consumer here - and this is good!

Kevin Cawley Goes Mobile : Google Open Social - Don't Believe the Hype

nope... not bagging on open standards. love open. I'm just not sipping this kool aid and trying to raise some concerns about the viability of this approach.

"Be the best and you'll get the most users. That's what open-ness is about. " True that... I just think that each of the hosts is gonna do their best to maintain and hold onto their biggest asset (people) and this approach is not gonna break down any walls at all.

agree on using different networks for different purposes for sure... just think that each of those networks may have their own agendas and will want to lock you in somehow and thus the fragmentation argument... maybe?

we'll see.

Kevin Cawley Goes Mobile : Google Open Social - Don't Believe the Hype

Good one on waiting around for communities... got a great point there for sure. In fact, I was discussing this with my friend and coworker Walker the other day and that was the same point he made. And I agreed!

But I think the j2me/open social analogy is solid. They are very similar. In both cases you have money making machines that want to lock you in or at least "enhance or tweak" the spec to their advantage. The result is fragmentation and the only way a j2me app will run across all mobile devices is if you spend lots of time tweaking for all mobile devices - unfortunately, I have forst hand experience with this ;)

And... do think open standards are a wonderful thing. Hey, I'm a developer diggin' in the trenches too :)
