Read the trumpet description again- "If they fail, the whole band fails." That doesn't always mean they are great. What if Frodo had the ring taken from him? Then he would have failed. My point was that when the trumpets mess up, it is really noticeable.

As for the saxophone comment- sorry. I do like saxophone. It's just too easy to pick on them.

I think another reader made the point very well, too. They said that the importance of Tom Bombadil is great, but many people just don't realize it (much like a bass clarinet in concert band!).

No, I know. There are some very cool bass clarinet moments in band literature (Lincolnshire Posy for example). But, I couldn't resist.
