Paul Kedrosky: Infectious Greed : Traffic Jams Out of New Orleans

If(when) evacuation is ordered, you can bet the nation will pay close attention to how effectively all those buses, currently on stand-by, are put to use. I'm betting that it will *look* more effective (i.e. "We got everyone out") only because those who were most vulnerable the first time (the poor, elderly, & mentally ill) simply were unable to return to New Orleans after Katrina for the same reason they couldn't leave New Orleans before Katrina: they couldn't afford it - no car, no gas money, etc.

Paul Kedrosky: Infectious Greed : Oil: We're Screwed in Either Direction

That's the classic short-term vs. long-term tradeoff. What concerns me greatly, however, is that there isn't more attention paid to the oil / plastics relationships. In order to effectively reduce our total oil consumption, we'll have to be willing to make changes there. Can we? I think our dependence on plastics - in everything from food packaging to medical supplies - is too great. What's the alternative to that? I am holding in my hand a coffee cup made of corn plastic. Is 'corn plastic' a feasible mass-production raw supply? Can it be used as a 100% replacement for plastic?

hey Chase... just FYI. Brad wears t-shirts pretty much everywhere. I've seen Brad on a dais next to the future Governor of Colorado... in a t-shirt. (it was green iirc). Funny but true: a meeting w/ Brad was the last time I ever "dressed up" for business. And for that - thanks Brad. Very liberating.

Feld Thoughts : What Do You Suck At?

I suck at saying no. Lots better today than when I began my career. Also suck at sticking to exercise plans, specifically running. I've progressed up to running 10 miles around the bay when I work in San Francisco, but won't get my ass out onto the trails 1/2 block from house in Highlands Ranch.

Paul Kedrosky: Infectious Greed : Yahoo's Response to Microsoft's Response to Yahoo

I think YHOO will hit $16 this week, possibly even on Monday. When that happens, it will trigger a massive selloff that will further drive down the stock.

YHOO will in fact get acquired this week; just not by MSFT and nowhere near the $33. Oh, and Jerry will be fired during an emergency board meeting as a direct result of the devastating loss in market cap. I predict that occurs on Thursday.

Jerry (and YHOO's board) have shown their willingness to place their own agendas above what was best for all shareholders.

Feld Thoughts : Announcing the iWear Fund

My new company is Tweet-Shirt. Pick a single day & we'll print every one of your tweets (even the really dumb ones) on a T-shirt for you. We'll then send you a Twitpic of the shirt & debit your Paypal account for $250. If you want the actual shirt, that's $500.

Please send the round (cash - large bills please - they're easier to pass thru customs on the way in/out of Boulder) to my suite at the St.J.

Feld Thoughts : Glue Me Back Together

The concept (and implementation) of buckets is going to be *very* important. Managing the intersection of data (unique, overlap, duplicate) amongst buckets will be the secret sauce.

VC Adventure : Failure

Yeah, failure does suck.

After I raised $700k in seed for my first startup (founder, CEO) but then failed to close the $4MM A round in 2000, it was the beginning of the end. I had 16 employees, three big customers, a new office & a lotta hope. That faded quickly when the reality of the capital market collapse became apparent.

I lost my employees, a big dream, $200k of my own cash, and nearly lost my marriage. But that failure taught me important lessons I wouldn't have learned if everything had been roses. And so I jumped back in.

Feld Thoughts : Learning to Sell at a Young Age

Rock on Brad.

On behalf of scouts (boy & girl) everywhere, thanks. And thanks for not being a total pushover, because that's not how life works.

Just last night it occurred to me (I'm dense you know) that I've taken on four critical roles in my boys' scouting pack, including the Executive Officer, to ensure that they continue down that path & learn everything they can about "the world" as elementary school students.

We've talked enough that you have a sense of what's important to me. This is at the top of the list.
