Highway 12 Ventures : Why We're Investing In Orbotix

Agreed. Ian + Adam have created something truly unique - I too was amazed when I saw Sphero last summer at Demo/Investor Day. Paul's a fantastic addition + based upon my conversations w/ him at both Defrag + Bur, this team is just *beginning*. [insert obligatory balls joke here]

Great approach. Both my boys learned to ride pretty easily using the classic approach in our cul-de-sac, & in fact both were on motorcycles almost as quickly at 4 & 5 yrs old. The youngest one used training wheels on his motorcycle the first season, btw - training wheels are awesome.

It delights me to see this announced. I've had the pleasure of getting to know both Eric & Paul over the past few years & this is simply a very public manifestation of the type of work they do every day. This will undoubtedly positively impact those entrepreneurs that attend Defrag via these scholarships - who knows what they'll do w/ the connections they make here? Bravo, Eric & Paul.

Feld Thoughts : Gmail Made Me Go To Bed Earlier Last Night

Sounds like something different. I lost messages that never arrived. I was able to send mail from a server I control, watch it leave, get accepted for delivery, change local status to 'sent' and then... nothing ever show up on the Gmail side. This happened to ~10 messages that I knew to look for, but have no idea how many times it happened to messages I wasn't expecting. I was able to duplicate the results of the above test several times one morning.

Interesting point "...resulting in [..] outright deletion because of its design." What's your source for this? I quit using Gmail a while back after one too many messages simply vanished. I used IMAP & had a massive folder / label structure, but never found any smoking gun for the message loss.

back when I intro'ed a couple very popular features of fp, there were a few days when I rec'vd & responded to over 500 emails. I introduced the forums as a direct result. That's not something I want to do again. Crazy stuff.

Curious about how you'd define fp. There are over 700M loc under mgmt, but well under a million users (~300k). Almost 3/4 of the projects, across all continents, use fp as part of their build system. So there's more than trivial utilization. Platform?

Feld Thoughts : New Life Experience - The MRI

I do what I mentioned when the visit has nothing to do w/ asthma. If the visit *is* asthma-related, I know that the insurance co. won't pay the claim, so I don't even mess w/ it. My former doctor got into the habit of coding my visits as asthma-related, even when they weren't and after I specifically told him to not do so. I have no idea why he (or his front office) did this. But when it continued after I specifically discussed this w/ them, I fired him. And I told him why. So No - I'm not the least bit concerned whether anyone associated w/ my insurance co. reads this. I simply now make sure that any health care pro *knows* I have asthma in case it affects the treatment plan, but if it isn't related to the visit (i.e. "I broke my thumb when I crashed my motorcycle"), then it shouldn't be in the notes. Making it illegal to deny coverage based on pre-existing conditions is perhaps the single greatest benefit that will come out of the recent bill. Young adults under 19 get relief under the law in September, but it doesn't kick in for everyone else until 2014. Till then, I have to manage my own MIB. Sucks, but that's how broken the system is today.

WRT the uninsured - I'm now forced to alert any health care pro at the beginning of an interaction w/ them: "I have asthma, but don't write that down. My insurance co won't pay any claims related to that. If it's in your notes - at all - they'll deny the claim." I fired my last doctor because of this, by the way. This is how awful the system has become. The new law won't help me until 2014, and admittedly, I'm not significantly burdened by it. But it is horrible practice of insurance cos that I'm pleased to see has been made illegal.

Medicine & medical technology is amazing. I recently visited the ER at the new(ish) Sky Ridge Medical Center in Lone Tree (twice in 1.5 months, I'll bore you why another time). The facility & all the equipment is brand new and the folks there can, I imagine, handle just about anything thrown at them. While an emergency room isn't exactly a soothing place, I'll note that this is by far the best one I've ever visited & I actually felt comfortable there. Oh, and my visit was $9600 each time. I'm generally a healthy guy with [normally] low annual expenses, so my yearly deductible is $2000. I paid that against the first visit, met the deductible and got the second one more or less free. (it was a two for one...)

Mendelson's Musings : Don’t Fall To This Trademark Scam

For those who have an existing trademark - i.e. the target of such a letter - be aware that you can re-register your own mark using the TEAS system on the uspto website. Expect to rec've these pitches near the anniversary of the 5th year of the granting of your trademark registration. (hence the timing of the letter to you, Jason... hey) There's plenty of documentation on this, so I won't bore anyone w/ too many details. The filing fee, as of recently, is $300. Be sure to use the "Combined Declaration of Use and Incontestability under Sections 8 & 15" and you're done for several years (maybe 9, I don't recall exactly...)
10.6.3? I'm running 10.6.4 on a handful of systems & haven't had any sleep related issues. Are you able to update to 10.6.4? ...and yes, sleep isn't the same as reboot. But I don't have a need to regularly reboot, except, as you note, after an update. I wonder if you may have a widget that is causing issues? I've had misbehaving widgets use nearly 100% CPU & generate a crazy amount of network packets. Once removed, the system behaves normally again.

@kevin, If a reboot is taking 15 mins, may I suggest simply using 'sleep'? If that also takes too long, try removing the sleepimage file + adjusting whether the system saves one at all. With no sleepimage file, the wake process is super fast, but comes at the cost of not saving system state, so buyer beware on that.

Agreed, the sleep/wake function has an edge case (or few) around the current charge level of the battery. I've seen this w/ my older MBP many, many times. You can control this (mostly) by recalibrating the battery, deleting the sleepimage and (if necessary] changing whether the OSX saves the system state to a file when it sleeps. (the sleepimage).
