Also, Apple has a history of scoffing at windows users because they need antivirus. The recommendation is a new thing in light of their platform gaining more traction in the market and, therefore, more targeting by malicious coders. The only reason it seems infallible is that pesky 6% market share Apple could rise above until two years ago. The BSD core is not as secure as the marketing has us believing which is why every patch has around 80 security fixes. OS X is not quite equal on the insecurity front with Windows, but it certainly isn't totally secure.
That's right, FW400 is gone in the MBPs. I know a lot of my studio engineer friends were really mad at the removal of FW at all on the MBs - forcing them to pay hundreds more for a simple serial protocol.
Also, I haven't had a virus on any of my Windows installs in at least 7 years. Though I only turn my PC on to stream Netflix these days... until I get an Intel based MBP next year anyway. But in any case, I stand by the rule of 98.7% of the time it's user error (3 years of IT Helpdesk talking there)... and 86.3% of all statistics are made up on the spot.

And I saw this yesterday about Apple's security. Apparently they're recommending antivirus software now.
No doubt it's better than MS. Linux? Not so sure. Not if you know what you're doing. For a consumer, OS X is excellent. But we are still locked into overpriced add-ons & peripherals, brand new display technologies that no one supports yet while killing the old standard, no Firewire in the new pro lines of computers though that is the one protocol pros use because it can sustain throughput in ways USB 2.0 can't. Apple pissed off a lot of pro film and audio people with that one.
Anyway. Not self-hating. Just self-aware that we are all at the mercy of THE STEVE's ego. Which he certainly has enough of.

BUT, you have to admit... they do some things poorly. Not being open at all is frustrating. And paying premiums for a lot of things - even simple software updates - is annoying. I'm an Apple fanatic but can still recognize where they aren't so nice to us dedicated folk.
