This is something we've been advocating for several years - tablet music apps call for new ways of making music, not interfaces that mimic 30 year old hardware and 700 year old keyboard interfaces. iOS has spurred a huge period of experimentation with alternative music interfaces. A real barrier to this, though, is that most musicians want to buy a virtual Minimoog.

SynthFan - good points. Apple has made a lot of unpopular decisions for iOS that have ultimately proven to be good for the platform. Google's smart, though, and will adapt Android over time.

Exactly - despite what some may think - our coverage is not driven by "support" for any platform (except for large format monster synths) but by where there's actually interesting synth action going on. Android as a music platform is about 2 years behind iOS. The platform's diversity and latency are regularly mentioned as obstacles, along with difficulty for developers to actually make money on their apps. These things will change over time - but it will take some time. If you know of other synth-worthy Android apps - let us know via the Submit a story page. And on the 'meh' comment - are developers going to wow anybody with another 303 emulator - or some crazy shit that blows people's minds?

That Everything is a Remix link is apt. Apple's success has been largely because they did these things better and earlier than other companies. People like to attribute Apple's success as product styling or marketing, but it's more attributable to excellent management practices. Otherwise, they wouldn't be able to outperform other very aggressive and even entrenched competitors over more than a decade. It's hard to imagine any other company that could have pwned the phone industry like Apple has over the last 5 years.

Don't expect the iPad to kill of laptops anytime soon (Apple still wants to sell Macbooks), but Apple's success with the iPad may be killing off laptop manufacturers. The top 2 PC manufacturers are in serious trouble, because there's no profit in selling generic Windows laptops. HP just announced it's leaving the PC business & Acer says it's going to lose money for the year (200+ million) because of the popularity of iPads. Apple is very discipline about focusing on the profitable areas of the computer business and not trying to compete against generic solutions.

Interesting comments - but it's important to remember that 99% of classical music is garbage that never gets played. Wouldn't you expect 99% of the music being made on mobile devices to be garbage? And that it would take the same effort that it's traditionally taken musicians to learn their craft in order for mobile musicians to move beyond this?
