India launches remote-sensing satellite Oceansat2

By Venkatachari Jagannathan, Sriharikota (Andhra Pradesh), Sep 23 : India successfully launched its 16th remote-sensing satellite Oceansat-2 and six small Europeans satellites on board a rocket that blasted off from here at 11.51 a.m. Wednesday.

The 44.4-metre tall, 230-tonne Indian rocket Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) freed itself from the launch pad at the spaceport and lifted itself up, lugging the 960-kg Oceansat-2 and the six nano satellites all together weighing 20 kg.

In copybook style, the rocket first flung out Oceansat-2 at an altitude of 720 km above the earth in a sun-synchronous orbit (SSO), followed by the four nano satellites - also called Cubesats, each weighing one kg. The remaining two, each weighing eight kg, were attached to the rocket's fourth stage.

The six nano satellites are owned by European universities - four from Germany and one each from Switzerland and Turkey. They were launched under a commercial agreement.

Soon after the satellites were put into orbit, Indian Space Research Organisation's (ISRO) satellite tracking centres started monitoring them.

Vice President Hamid Ansari witnessed the ISRO's successful launch.

The US on Wednesday demanded that "blood-thirsty" terrorists responsible for Mumbai attacks, including Jamaat-ud Dawa chief Hafiz Saeed, should be brought to justice.

Noting that terrorism was the "common enemy" of the US and India, new American ambassador to India Timothy Roemer said his government is pressing Pakistan "hard" on bringing to justice the suspects involved in the 26/11 strikes.

"We have a common enemy with India. And we are pressing Pakistan hard on Mumbai suspects and we are very grateful for the close cooperation that we have with Indian government on counter-insurgency, fighting terrorism, intelligence sharing.....," said Roemer in his first media interaction after assuming office.

He said India, with the close cooperation with the US, was better placed in fighting the "common enemy", which can sometimes be seen in Pakistan, such as al-Qaida, LeT and other terrorist outfits.

To a question whether Washington believed that there was enough evidence against Saeed, he said, "We want to bring blood-thirsty perpetrators of Mumbai attacks to justice, wherever they are."

He said he has been communicating with his government that people held in Pakistan in Mumbai attacks case need to be brought to justice and that includes Saeed also.

Describing the position of the US towards combating terrorism as "firm, resolute and bold", Roemer said, "We are committed to shutting down terrorist networks around the world and shutting down financing of those networks. We want to work with India and enhance our cooperation to achieve these results."

He also noted that both the US and India have common understanding on the issue of regional stability.

Roger Hunt from Scotland was in Mumbai on a business trip, when he found himself trapped for two days in the Oberoi Hotel.

Speaking for the first time about the Mumbai terror attacks, a Scotland-based victim recalls the sense of relief when commandos rescued him and is now planning a book on the incident.

Macduff-based Roger Hunt, 43, was in Mumbai on a business trip for the Bank of Scotland, when he found himself trapped for two days in the Oberoi Hotel. A will to survive and thoughts of his family pulled him through the ordeal, he said. Writing a book on the experience will be a cathartic experience for himself and a record for his family, Hunt told reporters in Scotland.

Recalling the time when he saw a group of men firing across the lobby as he finished dinner, he said: "I turned to look and I watched them open fire with their machine guns.

They sprayed bullets right where I had been sitting." Hunt took the lift to his room on the 14th floor and told other guests, who thought celebratory fireworks had gone off. He grabbed his flight ticket, car keys and passport and thought the trouble was a local feud that would soon be over. However, a bomb planted by terrorists rocked the hotel and started fires on the 13th and 14th floors. As his room started to fill with smoke, Hunt contacted a bank colleague in Mumbai so he could alert the fire services to his location.

Hunt said it became clear the situation was worse than he had thought and, for the first time, he thought he might die.

Give kiss a miss urge Hindus

Hindus have urged Bollywood and Central Board of Film Certification of India to go slow on re-introducing kissing in films and blatant westernization.

Acclaimed Hindu statesman Rajan Zed, in a statement in Nevada (USA) today, said that India and Hindus belong to an ancient civilization with certain set of norms and we were proud of that. Crude westernization was not the correct path to take, as everything Western was not always right and appropriate for us.

“Kambakkht Ishq” (Unfortunate Love, Sabbir Khan), “Hum Tum” (We You, Kunal Kohli), “Jab We Met” (When We Met, Imtiaz Ali), “Ru-Ba-Ru” (Face-to-Face, Arjun Bali), “Yuvvraaj”(Prince, Subhash Ghai), “Karma, Confessions And Holi” (Manish Gupta), “Murder” (Mahesh Bhatt), “Bachna Ae Haseeno”(Beware O Beautiful Ones, Siddharth Anand), “New York”(Kabir Khan), “Dev. D”(Anurag Kashyap), etc., were some of the examples of kissing on screen in the recent past, and upcoming “Love Aaj Kal” (Love Now-a-Days, Imtiaz Ali), “Rang Rasia” (Colours of Passion, Ketan Mehta) and “Kites”(Anurag Basu) are also said to be showing kisses.

Zed, who is president of Universal Society of Hinduism, pointed out that just for plain mercantile greed, Bollywood was trying to destroy the age old traditions and value system with the irrelevant arguments of “keeping with the times”, “globalization”, etc. In addition to Hindus, various other religious groups in India also were also supportive of the idea of movies staying within some moral parameters.

As cinema was a powerful and influential medium, when making movies Bollywood should be thinking of all the populace and not just minority upper classes that lived in their own compartments in bigger cities of India, Rajan Zed stressed.

Shiney denies raping maid, claims had 'consensual' sex
MUMBAI: With conclusive DNA evidence with the police, actor Shiney Ahuja on Friday was left with little choice but to admit in court that he did
have sex with his 20-year-old housemaid. Earlier police had said that Shiney had made a similiar admission to them but this was the first time it has been said in a legal document.

In his bail plea, the 36-year-old actor has argued that the rape allegation, however, was a ‘conspiracy’ to extort money from him. He insisted that sexual intercourse with the maid was ‘consensual’ and there was nothing amiss about the nail marks found on his body as such an ‘injury was possible during sex’.

The prosecution has taken a strong stand against the bail plea, saying if he is released from jail he could ‘‘tamper with evidence against him’’.

Public prosecutor RV Kini told the court that Shiney was an ‘influential person’ and chances were that he could
‘intimidate’ the victim if he was released from jail. Police is also citing a positive DNA report as evidence that he had forced sex with his maid. The actor’s lawyers have sought time to reply to police’s charges and the bail plea will now be taken up in court on July 7.

The actor has pleaded for leniency, citing his family background and absence of a criminal past. His father is a retired Army officer. He said his incarceration was affecting producers of his movies as shooting schedules had been help up leading to losses.
