Create Digital Music : Arturia's $550 Minibrute Analog Monosynth; How it Compares to Moog Rogue; Update on Fabric of Realit

i always find it hilariously frustrating that MANY people ask for MORE analog gear. Then want said analog gear to be affordable. When a company comes out and seemingly delivers then there's ALWAYS multiple people who deride such an accomplishment or as Mr. Distell did above my comment, claim that one must discard new cheaper options for essentially 'the real deal' ... The product isn't even out yet and yet people like him are claiming you should pay twice the price because it'll simply be worth it to do so, then slagging us all assuming we all buy only the newest and biggest fads for the sake of doing so... Listen man, some of us out there have VERY slim budgets and simply cannot 'throw down' $1,300+ at one time for anything outside of perhaps a new computer and similarly cannot/don't buy every new synth that hits the stores... Taking into account the Minibrute is in the SUB-$600 range I'm assuming such a product is primarily aimed at folks such as myself who have very little gear due to choice firstly and price/cost secondarily. We'd all love to purchase a luxury/sports car when we go car shopping but many out there have to be realistic and decide to settle on a utilitarian fuel efficient vehicle instead. And really there's nothing WRONG about that. Not every product that comes out needs to be or even should be ultra-boutique and dominant in every way possible to any conceivable competition... You know, the old 'Everything else is piss' statement/argument... The more options out there the better in my opinion. What's right for one may not be for another. The more analog options at affordable prices seems like only a good thing to me... I don't even know if the Minibrute will be good or not yet but it does look very interesting and if it delivers like I think it will I know it could very well be MY very 1st analog synth. I'm not saying it absolutely will be that but let's not discard new & interesting options for obviously great Moog products or items from any other company that are basically more than twice the price of the Minibrute, okay? Thanks... lulz...

Synthtopia : Do Expensive Audio Cables Matter? Monster Cables vs El Cheapo Cables

Most studio rats know that there's no difference between high end cables and low end cables in sound quality... Really the only thing you have to worry about is whether or not your cables are shielded because you can get some funky interference in some places depending on if you take your gear out on the road... If you're certain you aren't getting interference you can use whatever the hell you want really :)

Synthtopia : Groove X-R - A Hardware Host For Virtual Instruments

oh sweet! Guess I should have done some research before opening my big mouth lol... Time for me to check out those demos :) If everything is as tight as it would seem after these revelations then this would be a great viable alternative to having to plunk down $3k on a tight Mac system. I guess it depends on ones own needs as always but people slamming this seems pretty short sighted. I know lot's of people who would love something like this, especially for live performances since bringing ones own personal home studio on tour wouldn't be too logical just to use their favorite VSTs.

this looks like a great idea that could have been and still could be done much better... it would be awesome to have an ultra stable environment like this to use all your favorite vsts with live. I'd like to know if you just load in pre-configured sounds from your favorite vsts or how exactly that's handled because having all your favorite virtual instruments on an ultra-stable, ultra-fast environment is great but if you can't mess with all the many parameters pretty much every vst usually has then what's the point?

WOW, I love Kevin Smith but sheez he could not shut the F up for 2 seconds so poor Elvis could actually take part in the interview instead of listening to Kevin talk about almost to a word exactly what he talked about on "The Business" on this very station... was still cool to listen but man, was kind of hard to listen to since I've heard him talk about this in almost the exact same words before and I dare to say MULTIPLE times on other shows or avenues...

soooo... nobody at this fine site knew that these brands are owned by the same parent company save for the people that post in the comments??? Hmm, I can't believe I'm about to say this but thank goodness for people who post comments. LOL! Not that it's all very much important but I mean really, nobody at Synthtopia caught this one? I've done a quick Google search, nothing thorough or anything cuz it's not THAT important to know but I am curious... Who exactly IS the owner of these companies? I guess I can't really talk about Synthtopia not mentioning this fact but I mean, it would make this article a moot point knowing that they're all owned by one parent company and so of coarse would have similar designs... It's a no brainer at that point. Ah well :)

I know assumptions are the mother of ALL fuckups but maybe you can program one of those knobs as a mod wheel... would obviously lose the functionality of whatever it was doing before but still... i agree though no MOD or pitch wheels is a bummer. Still for $199, I still might get suckered into this thing or I should just prolly pickup the LPK25 since I already own the LPD8... lol, ah well

Synthtopia : The First iPad Street Musician?

LOL... this was one of the most silly/funny videos I've ever seen considering it to be a "street musician" ... However, as someone pointed out the iPad can be cheaper or just about right about the same price as say a decent acoustic or electric guitar I know that for sure... Yet, you can find decent guitars, bass guitars and even keyboards for far under $600 if you look in your local paper or eBay type deals. Whether or not that doesn't give this gal any "merit" I dunno... I'm not the end all be all judge in what is or what isn't.
Synthtopia : Korg microKey USB Keyboard Controller

Although, I guess you could pick up a full-size keyboard/synth like my Alesis QS6 for about $100-150 on eBay or something but then you'd have to have an audio unit with midi connections to really even USE it truly... which again bumps you into the HUNDREDS of $$$ range for any decent cheap solution like an M-Audio Fast Track Pro (USB)... So, again all I'm saying is unless someone really WANTS to learn piano or that style of playing and is fine with the stock sounds of whatever old keyboard like my great Alesis QS6 has... Then these mini solutions are a cheap and most of all fun way to get started or just fool around with music in general. No need to get serious about things unless you really want to get serious. Ya know?

I completely understand what you mean... but... not everyone can shell out hundreds even THOUSANDS of $$$ on a piano or synth. Even your cheapest synths cost at a minimum of about $600+ after taxes and all... However, if you had one of these and already had a computer of any type with all the free VSTs or cheaper packages one could easily get up and running for the same price as picking up a cheap Fender Squire guitar & amp. Maybe even less. On top of which, who knows how people want to play. Maybe they don't want to play like a conventional keyboardist or just want to play bass synth for their band or who knows... All I'm saying is why "worry" about stuff like this. Just let kids & people do what they do and hope for the best, they're going to either way so deal ;)

whoa whoa whoa, then what about people like me that make their own "sounds" in programs like Max/MSP or PD?!? Are you telling me Aphex Twin or Autechre aren't musicians?!? Both of which make their own sounds... Just because you don't like the process or method doesn't mean said method is FALSE. It just means different floats for different boats in different moats! And, btw I do play the guitar and keyboards as well but I don't think that in and of itself makes me anything besides a person who plays guitar and keyboards. I do agree about creating your own songs and compositions... But that CAN be done in many ways not just a couple... Broaden your horizons and open your mind a bit, you might just learn something.
