Adding design points to 4. Colors. Show self-control when emailing. Restrict yourself to one font color. Black will do the trick. Bold if you need emphasis. Don't go red, green, blue, yellow or all of the above. If no Comic Sans, no Papyrus. Just because Avatar got away with it: http://prttyshttydesign.blogspot.com/2010/01/open... doesn't mean you can, too. If I need a dictionary to determine the meaning of your emoticon, it has defeated its purpose. Finally, and this is a big one, piggy backing on your third point, Ed. When the sender of an email says, "hope you can make some sense out of this" I stop reading. Email should clarify, not mystify. Don't hit send if you haven't yet sorted out for yourself what you want to say. Go meditate, take a yoga class, say a prayer. Get straight with yourself. Then re-write the email. From a place of calm and clarity.

Couldn't work this into the article (above), but this NYT piece, "Yoga's New Wave" puts all this on its head, to extend the yoga metaphor.http://www.nytimes.com/2010/04/25/fashion/25yoga.... -> what if you didn't know who your teacher would be when you showed up for class? What if you just showed up and practiced? Same for your hair stylist? What a way to put brands and preferences aside and really live in the present moment. Would you want to go to a class like that? Would you want to get your hair cut at a salon you didn't know anything about the stylist?
