I have been sitting around biting my tongue today. Well, actually longer than that. It seems like an awful lot of time is spent debating what the direction of the event should take, who should be involved, and now we want to rename it?
RE BarCamp is going to evolve naturally based on the needs of its attendees/participants. Do these events still add value? Sure seems like it based on the attendance. I have been to quite a few of them. The most recent one in OC was one of the best, partially because we took it upon ourselves to make our experience better- part of what RE BarCamps are all about.
It was actually after OC when I heard some incredibly smart people spending all this time discussing, debating, evaluating the direction of the event that a light bulb went one, and I realized- we have these amazingly smart people in our community who need to fix something, solve something. Let's put that collective brainpower to work and see if we can't change the communities we live in.
I feel very, very strongly that the time spent discussing the name or the evolution of an event that will naturally evolve is far better spent solving a problem that impacts the lives of people. Think about it. We have so many smart minds. Over 3000 people have rsvp'd to a REBC event. Can one person start a change? Absolutely. Can 50 or 100 or 3000 make a major difference? YES.
If you are going to RE BarCamp San Francisco, please come join me in a session and let's debate and brainstorm and get passionate about something we have the power to change. Let's put our collective brainpower together to help people who don't have the luxury of a home. Children who don't have the luxury of a home.
Please?
