Big Hollywood : The Hypocrisy of Hollywood's Whitney Houston Sorrow

I wasn't speaking so much about similarities in talent as much as I was about similarities in situation. It's kind of like everyone could see what was coming with Whitney Houston, and I think most people can see what's coming with Lindsay Lohan. In other words, when stuff like this happens, it's sad but not surprising. It was the same with Amy Winehouse.

It's sad. I remember her more from when I was a kid, and she always seemed so happy back then. We'll probably be having the same discussion about Lindsay Lohan at some point. It may begin early or late in life, but some people just seem wired for self-destruction, and there's usually very little that can be done to prevent it.

Meager reductions in military spending and means testing for entitlements will do nothing. People simply don't understand the size and scope of the problem, and they won't until it's too late. All this talk about "cuts," whether it's coming from Obama or from Paul Ryan, is meaningless. Spending goes up every single year. When they talk about "cuts," they're talking about decreasing the size of the increase in spending. If we're spending more in ten years than we are today, it's not a cut. Look at what the debt clock will be like in 2016. It's over. There is no way to maintain even a semblance of the status quo. Once you come to grips with that fact, it's easier to realize — and advocate — what has to be done.

The fact that you believe the myths about Hoover tells me everything. Do you realize FDR ran against him saying he'd reduce government? Hoover increased spending in response to the Depression. It did nothing. FDR dramatically increased spending. Again, it did nothing. Even his treasury secretary admitted that fact in 1939. The Depression didn't end until after WWII, when the rest of the world was destroyed and we were left unscathed with a massive manufacturing sector. Where you make your biggest error is in thinking I supported the Republicans during the Bush years. I've consistently railed against big government Republicans for years, and I caught hell for it when Bush was in office. I didn't suddenly conclude spending was bad because Obama's in charge. Incidentally, have you forgotten the big ticket items during the Bush years had bipartisan support? Both sides have led us to this point, and what we now require is adult leadership who will tell everyone that fun time is over. We unequivocally cannot allow ourselves to end up like Greece. Not only do we need to start living within our means, we also need to take a hit to what we've come to expect from government. We've deluded ourselves for too long in believing government can be everything to everyone. That kind of thinking will be the death of this country if it continues.

Big Government : UPDATED: Santorum Leads in Michigan? Sheldon Adelson Pulls the Plug on Newt?

Again, you're directing all your attention away from this country's biggest threat. If you truly believe drugs, prostitution, and Iran are the most clear and present dangers this country faces, by all means vote for Mr. Santorum or Mr. Gingrich or Mr. Romney. If, however, you believe as I do — that the most clear and present danger to this country is its own government — then you have no choice but to support the only candidate who recognizes the true threat. You don't have to agree with everything he says. Even I don't do that. But if your conscience tells you he's the only one calling attention to what really threatens to destroy us as a nation, you ought to listen.

We're in the tens of trillions for unpaid future entitlement obligations. Unnecessary wars are stupid. I agree with you on that. But stop ignoring the biggest components of our debt just because you think those expenditures are "progressive."

And you think spending had nothing to do with it? Just one example: spending for the EPA has gone up 400% since the Clinton years. That's right: 400%. The environment is apparently 400% worse than it was when Bill Clinton was president. Now realize it's like that for every piece of our government. Yes, it's irresponsible to cut taxes as we embark on two wars. It's also irresponsible to dramatically ramp up spending everywhere else when there's absolutely no reason to increase spending beyond brainlessly believing that more equals better.

Yep, it's outdated. Pretty sad, isn't it? I've seen this email several times, and it will need to be revised on a monthly basis if it's going to keep up with the current rate of spending. Shouldn't that scare the hell out of people? It wasn't all that long ago that we used to measure national debt in billions.

Big Hollywood : Something Gays & Muslims Need Never Fear: CBS, Grammys Mock Catholic Church

Folks on here know I'm not a particularly religious person, but this garbage with Obama and Catholics is probably the most disgusting thing I've witnessed in all my years of paying attention to politics. It's incredibly offensive to me, even as a non-religious person. I would hope everyone can realize that if the government can target one group like this, it can target all groups. It's starting to grow apparent that nothing is off limits for the people currently in charge. This is dangerous for everyone, but what these elitists don't seem to realize is that it's even more dangerous for them. People will only take so much abuse before they decide to respond somehow.

There's only one person in the race who's consistently talking about this country's biggest threat: our debt. That guy is ridiculed relentlessly by so-called conservatives, which leads me to believe these people either aren't paying enough attention, or they're simply not the least bit serious about scaling back the size and scope of our government. If you think Paul's crazy and don't want to listen to him, that's fine. Listen instead to David Walker, the former Comptroller General. He's practically screaming about this issue. People think our biggest threat lies overseas, but they'll be smacked in the face by reality a few years from now. By the time of the next presidential election in 2016 — if we have one — we'll be at the debt levels now seen in Greece. And that's an optimistic assessment. It could be even worse by then. Interest on the debt will begin to eat up more of our "budget" than we spend on defense. Do you think this ends well for us? It's time for folks to wake up and face the truth that we are in as much trouble as Europe. In fact, we're in even more trouble seeing as economic collapse in a country of 300 million will be far more messy than economic collapse in a country of 11 million. Keep believing debt is a back-burner issue if you wish. I'll be here a few years from now, saying "I told you so," and you'll all be predictably claiming you were right there with me all along. History will not be kind to the people who enabled this mess.

Big Peace : 13-Feb-12 World View: Greece Approves Austerity Measures Among Riots as Athens Burns

CDS triggering would bring down the entire system. Too many people getting rich off of it for that to be allowed to happen. What'll occur is that the banks will get paid, the Greeks will get screwed, and the system will continue to limp along. There is no international bankruptcy court to deal with this situation, and the same story will play out in Portugal, Italy, Spain, etc. The financial status quo must be preserved for as long as possible because all the "right people" depend on it, and that's exactly what will happen. The folks in charge are, in essence, looting these countries right now in the hope that when everything finally collapses, they'll have so much power that citizens won't come after them. I wouldn't be so sure of that if I were them.

Big Peace : Ron Paul On Iran: 'Let Israel Deal With It'

First, you haven't suggested anything that will make a difference. Sanctions will do absolutely nothing. We've had an embargo on Cuba for half a century, and in case you haven't noticed, the Castro bros are still in charge. What will sanctions on Iran do? They'll make the citizens who hate the regime start seriously hating the foreigners who are starving them. Said differently, sanctions will drive the young people — who are more westernized than many folks realize — into supporting the mullahs they currently despise. We need to keep the young people on our side. They vastly outnumber the older radicals who are dying off and will be the key to a more moderate future. Second, by suggesting Israel can't do something on her own because it might invite retaliation, you imply we have no choice but to do it instead. What kind of bass-ackwards kind of thinking is that? You're essentially saying we have to do everything for Israel because there'd be blowback against Israel if they did it. Won't there be blowback against us? Do you honestly think we can drop bombs on Iran and have nothing bad happen in return? Not only is this incredibly naive, it also overlooks the fact that Iran has consistently said if we bomb Iran, they'll bomb Israel in retaliation. In other words, if Israel bombs Iran, Iran bombs Israel. If we bomb Iran, Iran bombs Israel. (I won't even go into the fact that the Pentagon has already said bombs won't be enough to stop an Iranian nuclear program. It will require boots on the ground, and if you think we can afford that — or that the American people will stand for it — you're probably crazy.) Folks, they're gonna go nuclear at some point. And when they do, we'll still have subs parked off their coast, ready to annihilate them at a moment's notice. Israel will still have hundreds of nukes pointed at them, ready to annihilate them at a moment's notice. We've already spent enough blood and treasure over the last decade without seeing any real return for that effort. Let's be a little smarter over the next ten years than we have been.
