Goth music was heavily inspired by glam rock and Bowie. Bauhaus was often accused of being a bad Bowie knockoff, and in response, released a (bitchin') cover of "Ziggy Stardust". Coincidentally, this was their biggest hit.

The Spirit is a different beast entirely, as he's adapting it from a 60-year-old (yet still classic, despite the racism that went hand-in-hand with the times) comic strip, and is changing key aspects of the story to suit his bastardized, hyper-stylized vision. Sin City was based on his own material, which was/is fairly recent.

Well, while it's still similar to TDtESS in that it's conceptually destroying the original source material, The Spirit was done, I think, because one man felt like jerking his self-proclaimed genius off on screen, while the other is just another example of Hollywood beating it's point into the audience. (I forgot to mention I wouldn't pay money for TDtESS.)
