One response to that might be: isn't "equipping the saints" the part of "the work of the ministry" that he is gifted and designed to do? In other words, isn't equipping people the pastors' ministry? If there is other "ministry" that pastors are to do, 1) who is doing the equipping and 2) why aren't others doing that ministry?

Thanks, Steve. Both sides of your point (the pastor's job to do or to equip?) are frequently-mentioned and will certainly show up in my study.

Regarding weddings, at least in Indiana, the state doesn't care who "officiates" or says the words; they just care who signs the legal marriage certificate. I conducted my brother's wedding before I was ordained, but the pastor signed the paper. The state doesn't care.

Thanks, Mike! You're right - sounds like a call for all Christians, not just pastors.

LOL - nice! I'll be sure to include that as one possible option. (Unfortunately, way too many people actually believe that!)

I call that ... (wait for it) ... "teaching"! :-)

We can teach people principles of discipleship until (insert your favorite comparison here), but if they don't do anything about it, i.e., live out those principles, can we really call it "discipleship"? I don't think so.

Especially in the Gospels, I see discipleship as a process of movement closer to Christ-likeness. Teaching alone doesn't do that. In fact, in the NT economy, hearing=doing and faith=obedience. They can't really be separated.

I'll post more on this soon. Lots of thoughts I've been processing recently. Some big things are going to start rolling out at the church in this vein.

Thanks, Steve. I don't remember having heard it exactly like this, so it could be original.

You're right, Terri. It's going to be an awesome gathering in Heaven when they get to see the full scope of their reach over these years.
