Robert Montgomery had just returned from the Pacific where he skippered a PT Boat; John Ford too, had just returned from doing his documentaries. Manyin the cast and production team were WWII veterans, and the film has the look, and feel of the real deal. Poor John Wayne, who has always been castigated by some for not serving- he was a tad old, had a football injury and kids- was given a real hard time by Ford who enjoyed embarrasing him in front of everbody for his lack of service.
