Frank Dickinson : Rich People Are Evil

Rich people are evil? No, human beings are evil regardless of race, sex, power or similar - at least they are if the want to be. Check out Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation - yep, really evil. Or the Black Card Circle Foundation over in L.A., where millionaires gather regularly to support charities with huge donations and benefits. Success - brings out the best in folks, huh? ;-)

danny brown - community / connection / conversation : How to Sell Social Media - Twitter

That's where the social audit comes in, Michael - only go onto a platform if it's viable for you. Some of the best results have come for smaller clients, who can take away a lot of their advertising and marketing output when they see that the market is there for them.

Brent Csutoras : What Does Google Think of Hiring a Social Media Consultant?

It's only one of the best sites if you know a Power Digger. Otherwise it's just a bunch of noise that very few benefit from. And the new Digg toolbar just takes more benefits away from the target - no real impetus for the user to visit a site if they can stay within Digg to view something.

danny brown - community / connection / conversation : Why Social Media Needs the FTC

As Rachel mentions below, Omar, I don't think it's free speech that the FTC is going after. As rightly mentioned by detractors of the plan, opinion (and the right to have that opinion) shouldn't be silenced. What does need regulating is the false marketing and sales pitches being happily given by people and companies because there is no regulation. While the social media space can be quick to warn off bad news, this might not necessarily reach the amount of people that a warning or censure from the FTC would. I think that's why the move should be welcomed.

danielpatricio.com : Skittles hacks and slashes its way into social media

When I heard about the Skittles *experiment* (for surely that's all it is), I was very surprised. Fine, open up to social media and the channels that can provide - but I can't help but feel they're going to alienate a lot of their existing visitor base. While people inside the social media bubble may look at it as further acceptance of the medium, what does it really mean to the average web user? Sure, they'll know Facebook, but have a Twitter discussion stream as their main visual seems bizarre. I guess time will tell, but I'm not really sold on this one.

It's a good system. Only thing it's really missing is the open Twitter stream feature that Twhirl and Tweetdeck has, but they have said that it's next on the agenda.

Just Kickin' It : I Smell Another Rant - 4

Sadly, this seems to be an all-too common occurrence in the UK (speaking as a Brit now living in Canada). Maybe not this particular age, but certainly as far as teenage pregnancies go. The Government has failed miserably - offering so much support and resources for pregnant teens, with benefits and social help - they almost invite teens to get pregnant. Sex education is failing; parents are failing; the state is failing. Until this problem is looked at properly, and effective solutions put in place, this will just be the tip of a very big iceberg.

Uhaveavoice : Facebook TOS - A Net/Net Conclusion

It's like me saying that I own all the comments on my blog and if I put them in a book and sell them, I don't have to offer you any credit for leaving them in the first place. Intellectual Property is a delicate matter, but Facebook screwed up regardless with their heavy-handed "take it or leave it" approach. Which is probably why they ate a big slice of humble pie today: http://www.cnn.com/2009/TECH/02/18/facebook.rever...

Just Kickin' It : What Really Grinds My Gears - 13

The problem is we've gotten too lazy and expect things to be done for us. The Internet allows us to shop from home; TV gives us news without the need to go out for a newspaper; music can be downloaded without going to a record store; fast food delivery comes to our home... It's the same path. If we stop interacting on a personal level (much like these examples above and more like them) and rely on technology to paint our picture of the outside world, then we will forget how to act like a human being. As you are seeing firsthand every day, sadly.

I see what you're saying, Andrew, but I'd also suggest that like most things, people are getting tired of drama? Just look at Tatiana on this year's American Idol (if you watch it) - she's complete drama and already the backlash against her is beginning. ;-) Wouldn't it be better to stop splashing and actually start swimming?

Just Kickin' It : A Very Long Comment

I see your point about the $3.00 versus the card saving, although I was simply using the single cash fare as the easiest example (since a lot of people still use just cash for both systems). And while Mississauga might not officially be in the GTA, the TTC subways still come here, hence the comparison. It's a funny one about which system is preferable - I do see more politeness in the Mississauga drivers (generally), but I'd also say what point's politeness if there's less transport to start with? At least in Toronto you had more choice; Mississauga seems to be "Use this one service or you're screwed." Hey ho... :)

It's definitely been one of the key marketing *tools* for a while - convince of need, or "create the need" as you say, Jamie. Now, though, there's a definite groundswell of opinion where people want to be asked what they want, as opposed to told what they want. From Governments to business to consumer purchases, there's much more "Could I have" as opposed to "Okay, um... thanks". Which can only be a good thing. :)

danielpatricio.com : Generation Y, piracy and the future of the music industry

Piracy only survives while there is a need for it. Sony found that out with the original Playstation and it's $60 games, movie and record studios are realizing (maybe too late) that their exorbitant prices are fooling no-one. Offer some real value and you might just get the public back on your side.

Airlines are laying off staff with the same veracity that the manufacturing industry is. The difference being, airlines are a service industry. If the service isn't there, even by one person in your whole company, that can skew a thousand voices. Do the math. Then do the right thing.
