This is Charlie O'Keefe. Yes, I worked with everlater in the early stages. No, I did not write "all of their original code base". I give the whole everlater team a lot of credit for how much they learned and how far they've come.

I'm wondering how else to attack this -- I mean, if you could easily reverse a hash like this, that would basically undermine anything out there that depends on SHA1 for security, yes?

Feld Thoughts : Some Tech Articles for You on a Saturday Morning

I think "feedback loop" is a great way to sum it up. Looking at the trendy software development methodologies, or broadening even more to include "customer development" ( http://startuplessonslearned.blogspot.com/2008/11... ), the common thread is adding, or tightening, feedback loops. The waterfall method is the one software people dump on and the reason is simple: no feedback loop.

If google calendar were designed to better suit the specific case of taking orders over the phone and scheduling deliveries, would that make it better software? The way to judge "better" is probably product-market fit ( http://blog.pmarca.com/2007/06/the-pmarca-gu-2.ht... ). This yardstick applies in both the consumer case and the enterprise case.

PeteSearch : Only Connect

Very cool. I'm curious about tools for doing these kinds of graph visualizations. I have a bit of a bias toward "open web" javascript/canvas as opposed to flash, but I haven't validated that opinion with actual implementation. Curious what your thoughts are on that.

Union Station : 5 Ways to Speed Up Your Rails App

I'm also curious about this built-in queuing in rails 3. Is this the type of thing where the notion of "put this message on a queue" will have a standard rails syntax, and you'll be able to easily switch out different queuing implementations (ala ActiveRecord and SQL databases)?

PeteSearch : Sewers and startups

Hey Pete! Came across this post on O'Reilly Radar! This definitely touches on a lot of the same questions I've been wrestling with. I started off as an engineer that would balk at the idea of doing something halfway. Something that recently helped me advance my thinking on this was Eric Reis' excellent set of posts at http://startuplessonslearned.blogspot.com It is definitely tricky to strike the right balance here. I think it's worthwhile to focus on the differences between a startup and a sewer system rather than the similarities. Build things with flexibility in mind, and don't let them become quite so carved in stone.
