I had a very similar reaction when I saw The Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants. I couldn't bring myself to see the second one. I'm enjoying this series. Keep it up.

Yes, problem #3 is a concern, but only a minor one. I generally prefer reformatting any content that is delivered as a Word doc, and because it doesn't retain that formatting, it makes my job a great deal easier.

Hi Beth! We're so glad you enjoyed the comment. But rest assured, we don't hate your father. We treat everyone equally at VPL, even if they have questionable taste in sports teams. :)

CECILY.info : Foursquare in Libraries: Social Media Incentives for Engaged Patrons

Agreed, which is why a time-based contest - i.e., "If you become Mayor of Library X by date Z" might work best. Another option that might work well would be to award the person who becomes Mayor most often within a specified date period.

Yeah, I'm excited about the idea. I just hope it's something we're able to put into practice, if even for a little while.

CECILY.info : If I Could Build a Library Catalogue

Yep, I've seen it, though I've never worked with it personally. I like the idea - but the conventional wisdom I've been hearing is that systems like Koha and Evergreen aren't well suited for library systems as large as mine. I don't know how true that is because I haven't done the legwork, but in just looking at the list of libraries who are using Koha, I don't see anyone that's a comparable size. Still, it's good to see competitors adopting these kinds of features for catalogues. I think the major vendors are definitely taking notice.

CECILY.info : Self-Portrait

I don't like being photographed. In fact, this is one of the main reasons I got into photography in the first place. If I'm the one always taking pictures, then no one can take unflattering photos of me. But this I don't mind so much. It's only my face, it's blurry, and the parts of me that I don't want anyone to see are hidden.

Myles, Check the help documentation in Automator, under Creating Workflows -> If your Finder plug-in workflow doesn't work. I think there's something there that might help you solve this problem.

CECILY.info : The Proust Questionnaire

The thing is, Ms. Jen, I wouldn't have you any other way. So rather than asking you to put your light under a bushel for my benefit, I'd enjoy it for as long as I could, and then politely remove myself and go for a long walk to recharge my batteries. It isn't so much the optimism that gets me (although it does make me weary), it's just the energy it takes me to try to keep up the facade of being on the same page as the optimistic person.
