I've read the forum post from the other site. Looks like he has a problem with the comments showing up on everypage and its the same comments no matter what. When you speak of IDs I need a little bit more information.

Eric Rasch made an excellent point: "Of course, I think one issue that might come up with any of these methods is if you have comments on your site, then have Posts close comments automatically after a period of time (say... 30 days). Won't these methods hide all previously posted comments?" Just because you close comments doesn't mean you want to hide the previous post

What firewalls and antivirus/security suites are you running on the vista box?

The error message got me thinking of two possible things, have you setup the same username and password on the 2k server? They have to match whats on the vista. Also, is your current network setup as "private" on the vista home?

how are you browsing to the server? can you open up start --> run --> and type in \\\\servername or \\\\192.168.1.x I will need more detailed information before I can help you.
