Big Government : On the Anniversary of the Repeal of Prohibition, Let's Not Repeat History

But it shouldn't be the place of the government to buy the excessive crop so the price will rise. I'm not going to go into the economic factors and the large excess of farms that caused crop prices to be so low in the '30s. It's really boring. Fortunately, most people that would actually have the drive to go out and "pick their own" aren't the type to sue. Those people are more likely to sue Walmart for using slippery wax on the bathroom floors or Costco for not warning people not to try and pull a whole pallet of Cheez-Its from the second shelf.

That is absolutely true. One of our focuses in Afghanistan, though, seems to be the suppression of poppy crops and paying farms to plant something else. Then there's the military "advisers" we have sent to Columbia, Peru, and other South American countries to disrupt the cultivation of coca leaves. The War on Drugs has become a "real" war in every sense of the word. It's been that way in Columbia in the 70's and 80's and it's that way in border towns in Mexico today. And lets not forget about the increasing militarization of SWAT teams in America (you know, armored vehicles, automatic weapons, military tactics, ect.) that has been made necessary by the War on Drugs. Oh, and the rise of street gangs from local hoods to national criminal syndicates, largely propelled by the illegal drug trade. Legalizing everything would take away the money from the criminals that make enough money to be able to outgun the governments of Latin America and perhaps revitalize American farming. Just saying...

Actually, that's exactly what I'm going to do: http://www.cato-at-liberty.org/2009/10/27/gallups... If you would take the time to read the post, you'll see that Gallup finds that about 20% of those polled (this is in the poll that you're citing) identify themselves as libertarians. I disagree with you on how Obama won the youth vote. Social issues are far more important to younger voters than economic issues. They tend to be attracted to those that they perceive as giving them the most freedom. True, Obama's campaign of mindless "Hope and Change" brought out more than a few clueless idiots, but you can't discount the great number of young voters to went for his stances on social issues (which he did lie about a good bit). That's the way I see it. It seems like a ton of the GOP wants to tell me what to do based on their religion. I feel I should be free to do what I please as long as it don't harm another person. I'm hoping that the GOP will reform it's way and move back to the party of Barry Goldwater.

Haven't you been paying attention? You're confusing the social conservatives with Libertarians. Did you even read the article. BTW, I would suggest that you check someplace like OpenCongress.org. It turns out that Paul votes with the GOP 74% of the time. http://www.opencongress.org/people/show/400311_Ro... And what exactly is a "conservative" in your mind? Someone who always toes the party line? Or is it someone who votes on their principals that they put forth before being elected (you know, it's that area of their website that says "Issues"; they usually talk about what they believe in there)? I'll leave you with this: "The basis of conservatism is a desire for less government interference or less centralized authority or more individual freedom and this is a pretty general description also of what libertarianism is." - President Ronald Regan

Yeah, but so is most of the voting population in this country. If Palin ran, don't you think Obama would try run against the Palin of '08? The woman has ruined herself in national politics and only excites the most vocal parts of the GOP.

Could it be? Do you mean that *gasp* people don't want the government telling them what to do?! Shock of all shocks... I really think this is why the Democrats have grown in the past 8 years. Younger voters and independents identified the GOP as the party of the War on Drugs, the Moral Majority, and other intrusive regulations in their personal lives. People tend to care more about things that effect them in the most visible ways. If they can't go online and play poker, for example, they're going to be upset. The taxing and spending isn't really that visible. If the GOP decides to go more Libertarian in it's social and foreign policies, then maybe they have a chance with younger voters. Until then, they'll just have a bunch of aging Bible thumpers.

Big Hollywood : Health Nazis Target Movie Snacks

Wha? Soda, candy, and popcorn covered in something-that-isn't-really-butter® butter flavored topping isn't good for me?! The outrage! The indignation! Look, most people don't go to the movies everyday (or week, or month; heck, I usually only go to one movie a year), so this isn't really that big of a problem. It's basically like having an extra Thanksgiving or two a year (at least for me). I've got to wonder, though: is this what life under Obamacare will be like? Eggheads deciding what snacks we can have while we watch movies? The last movie I saw in theaters was Zombieland. If the CSPI has there way, I would think the zombies would be enjoying their snacks more than me. I'm just not going to stand for that!

Fox's inability to comprehend that her movie might have just sucked is astounding. It failed for the same reason that Gigli failed: it plain sucked. I personally don't think Megan's Body's failure is due to here moronic comments, but people actually using good taste for once in her career. The Transformer movies were carried by the SFX, not by Fox (as much as she likes to think that it was her doing). This is just another example of a starlet with a huge ego. Sad, really.

Big Hollywood : Film Noir Revival, Anyone?

I believe that No Country for Old Men was about looking back. Think of Tommy Lee Jones' character, always reflecting on his past and such. It's been about 2 years since I've seen it, so I may be talkin' out of my you-know-where. Either way, I really don't care. It was a brilliant and entertaining film that I could get the same enjoyment out of today as I did back when I first saw it. I'm surprised Sin City didn't make it on the list. It was an ultra-stylized film with characters that had hard morals (it's just that they're the character's own morals). Sure, the characters are "doomed and nasty", but they value many of the things that "good-guy" characters do (justice, defense of the defenseless, loyalty to friends, ect.).

Big Hollywood : Hollywood Villains: Leftist Agenda Trumps Audience Appeal

I think it's kinda funny that people ignore the fact that "Basterds" is a remake (of an Italian film, at that!). I believe that Tarantino wanted to preserve the B-movie premise in the movie, but tweak it to his creative tastes. G.I. Joe is a joke. Moving on... I really don't want to talk about Rambo, since the original's message was almost entirely lost (right up until the last moments of the film) and I haven't seen any of the others films. Either way, my opinion is this: Having politically correct villains isn't going to keep me from watching a film, but if it's plot goes out of it's way to show that the "villains" motive isn't evil I'm gonna groan and stop watchin'. Films should be about entertainment, first and foremost!
