I love the pause/count to 3 tip! Sometimes it takes only that short amount of time to realize you don't actually need to say what you were about to say. Brevity can absolutely be a good thing. Some reactions really are better under the hood rather than out of the mouth!

This loosely reminds me of those Choose Your Own Adventure books, in which I always fell into a mass of quick sand, or the mouth of a beastly creature. Perhaps I should fail to list those options as potential outcomes when pitching my next grant?

The need is directly related to what you ultimately want. Sometimes, defining what you truly want is the hardest part. For instance, let's say you know you want a million dollars. You also know what you need to do in order to earn that (assuming you're not going to just stumble on that kind of money). Are willing to do it??? If so, then yes, you need the "training." If not, then pick another direction.
