9 to 5 Mac | Apple Intelligence : Republican Presidential candidates ponder Apple outsourcing gadget-making to China

Agreed... the idea of bringing the jobs back to the US at the expense of an iPhone costing 3 or 4 times as much.. that doesn't help america overall. Like Ron Paul says there.. it's a much more complicated issue than that and the real reason we don't have more jobs here are the unions having too much power, etc.

Guess I misunderstood then cause it sounded like you DON'T want new features. I want the new appletv to be 1080P, have an app store, game controllers... etc. If opened up to developers (like me) it could be better than the wii.

9 to 5 Mac | Apple Intelligence : Apple training retail managers on union awareness tomorrow; biannually

I worked at a place where we were well paid but were all freelance and didn't have health benefits. So the workers organized and tried to go union so we'd have benefits. They met with the local union rep, who made a lot of promises (like a politician), and most everyone signed union cards. The union came in and met with management and negotiated. The shop went union only to find that every union contract with an employer can be different, and the union rep had short changed the workers giving them a worse overall deal than they had to begin with. So now hours were watched more closely and overtime wasn't approved as easily, and other promises were not kept (like a politician). So the shop sued the union to get out of the contract, de-unionize, and tried to get it back the way it was before. It was a total mess. Unions in the USA were important back in the 50's when workers had terrible dangerous conditions and factories were basically sweat shots and allowed child labor. But my experience with modern Unions has been nothing but bad. Now they represent a force that allows a mob like mentality, promotes laziness, and blocks non-union workers to get a fair chance at work. Today they prevent manufacturing to be kept in the US and instead create conditions where it's almost impossible not to just source from other countries. I hope the apple employees don't unionize.

9 to 5 Mac | Apple Intelligence : Watch out! Using Siri while driving is still illegal in California

This isn't correct - who ever spoke on behalf of the San Jose Police was talking out of their ass without doing any research and without talking to lawmakers or a judge. I'd like to see it battled out in court. Pushing the button on the mic on the iPhone headset to activate siri can't be illegal while driving. You can do it without taking your eyes off the road. Can't be any more that it would be to use that same button to place or end a call - which IS legal and IS considered hands free. You can totally use Siri without having the phone in your hands. It can be in your pocket.

9 to 5 Mac | Apple Intelligence : Let's talk Tuesday: iPhones, iPods, and more

I'm a 'real' developer and not just someone who got the beta to enjoy the new software early. You sound like one too. My statement about beta7 not being ready is that the whole OS is freezing for a few seconds when I switch between apps. For example, if I get a text message and switch to that app and start typing. It's a brick for about 5 or 10 seconds during which time it's not even caching my touches. Then it wakes up and I can type. Same thing happens in other apps. If I get a notification that I have only 10% power left WHILE I'm on a call, the phone call freezes for a second until that notification is cleared out. During that 10 to 20 seconds the phone call is totally dead and we can't hear each other. Then it resumes. I think that's a major issue, although it could just be something up with MY phone, and not the OS. iCloud and iTunes match also seem to be not ready, although they could release iOS 5 before iTunes Match goes live. I'm just saying that the lack of a GM yet is a very clear indication that no new devices will be available tomorrow. And my guess is that beta8 will be released tomorrow and the GM will be like a week later. But you could be right, especially if that freezing thing is just my phone and not an os thing.

9 to 5 Mac | Apple Intelligence : Co-Founder of Siri: Assistant launch is a "World-Changing Event" (Interview)

I use facetime a LOT. ... and I would use it even more if it worked over the phone network, which it will soon enough. Certainly next year's LTE phone will. And on how long we'll be using this. I suspect that there will be places this will shine and others not so much. But this technology WILL evolve to be a major input / processing device for computers and handheld devices. It has to be a baby before it can be an adult. 5 or 10 years from now when you're using it all the time, or next year when you're using facetime all the time, think back and remember these days when it wasn't so common. Like how common it is to even have "the internet in your pocket" on a handheld device. Do you remember what phones were before the first iPhone came out?

Yeah.. the missing reference to an iPhone5 in the SDK is meaningless at this point. iOS5 is still in beta and no GMs of anything have been released. If they were releasing iOS5 on tuesday it would have to already be GM. AND it has been a while since beta7 was released. So my belief is that apple is holding out on the next version of beta until after the event - simply because it probably contains clues to what they are releasing. I don't think we'll see a GM on the 4th either, cause beta7 still isn't ready for prime time. They still need to release one more beta before going gold master. I suspect a new beta on the 4th and a GM about a week after that. I guess I'm a 5er... the other problem is why would they have needed to wait until NOW to release an iPhone4S in the same case? What's the big holdup? The A5 chip already works in the iPad and the bigger camera is no big deal either. If that's all they're releasing couldn't they have done it back in june or july? Were they waiting on software? I think if this report is true (and it could very well be), it won't fair well for the new CEO or the stock price.

9 to 5 Mac | Apple Intelligence : Amazon: "From Kindle, the Fire is born"

I don't get a device that you can't load your own stuff on, has no real internal space (only a streaming cache) and can't stream content directly from your computer. Doesn't it make it completely worthless when you're, say, in your car one a road trip?
9 to 5 Mac | Apple Intelligence : Netflix spins off by-mail group as Qwikster

Streaming is great in concept and I love my appleTV.. and I as much as I've fought it I love certain things about Netflix on apple tv. However... Even more I really love the quality of BluRay. I could care less if my computer has a bluray drive in it. I don't watch movies there. I watch movies in my home theatre which is a sony projector and a 13 foot screen. AppleTV 720P looks acceptable for SOME things. But if it's an action flick or some epic movie... there's nothing like 1080P at high bandwidth. We're talking the difference between 3mbps and 35mbps. There is no comparison to the quality. Netflix streaming, when it's HD (which is 720P on apple tv) also doesn't look too bad. I think where netflix is really strong is in tv shows... but their streaming content is soooo limited. Some of it looks like total crap. Some of it (what they call hd) isn't too bad. But it's not like music where you can get just about anything as a downloadable file - and I think we're YEARS away from content really being available. TV and Movies.. only a very small slice of all the content out there is available to stream. Weird eclectic tv shows but not other cool eclectic tv shows. And netflix's recent loss of stars will be felt for sure. But overall... current stuff just isn't on netflix. Mostly only stuff that you've already seen, or weird indie or bbc things that you might not have seen yet. I do hope Apple updates the appleTV and adds a 1080P option. But MOST people don't have fast enough internet to watch a high bandwidth stream. And it will be a good 5 years before a large enough percentage of the population does to justify it. In the mean time streaming is either a netflix which is limited in content and quality, or appletv which has the content and ok quality but is too expensive to rent and too drm'd to buy. My guess... is that apple will come out with a netflix killer soon. Probably when the next appletv is released.

9 to 5 Mac | Apple Intelligence : What the iPhone 5 icon looks like extrapolated into full size

It's also possible that the icon needed a certain number of pixels to make the bevel look like a bevel... in the icon.. and that blowing it up isn't representative at all of how large the bevel will be. An icon of a phone isn't a picture of a phone. It has to be changed to make it represent what it represents at a smaller size. I hope that it does mean that there's a larger screen and a squattier home button, but it doesn't rule out the possibility of a much smaller bevel. We've been hearing rumors for ages about the edge to edge screen and while I think there has to be SOME bevel it will eventually be much smaller... hopefully in this 5. I just hope we're not all kidding ourselves and that there is a 5 and not only a 4s. As to if apple would make a 4s as a low cost at the same time as a new 5... of course they would. At the quantities they're running it actually might be cheaper to manufacture if all the phones have the new chip. I expect this will be the biggest release of new mobile products ever announced all at once. I think we'll see a new line up of iOS devices with the exception of the iPad 3 waiting until april to release. I bet we'll see two new iPhone models, new iPod touches, and a new appleTV - all announced at this next event. They want to reinforce with the investors that they're fine without steve as ceo. Everything is completely orchestrated - with Steve leaving, his book coming out, the iPhone delay. It's all for a purpose.

Not to be petty.. but macrumors can't decide what they believe. They've been consistently anywhere from a few days to a few weeks behind the rest of the blog sites. And they've labeled rumors as "doubtful" in the past that now seem to be the expected iPhone 5. I've been getting most of my mac news from 9to5.
No.. there's still something wrong with the math. It basically says that 1/5th (20%) is chrome. That 5% is mobile and that 1% is the iPad... then it says THEREFORE 1/5th (20%) is spread across all mobile devices. So 5% = 20%? I'm seriously confused. Chrome is not just mobile, right? Give us a chart or table or something.

9 to 5 Mac | Apple Intelligence : Bloomberg: iPhone 5 in September with A5 chip, 8MP camera; next iPad gets higher-res, more responsiv

PMZanetti - Will you be my friend? Anyways.. As a consumer, sure I'd like the iPad to have a retina display, but as a developer it scares the heck out of me. I already am using 2048x2048 textures to make my ipad game. Doubling the res seems like it would be difficult to pull off and keep the thing running snappy. But I suppose it can be done. Still it would take time to fix all my apps. Keep in mind that apple uses a scale factor value for some graphics scaling. This allows you to still put something on the screen at the same x,y coordinate and have it be scaled to the new coordinates on basically any screen size (same aspect ratio). It's 1.0 for the old iphone and ipad and 2.0 for the iphone 4's retina. That's one of the ways they easily pull off the two resolutions supported in the same software. Theoretically they could use a scale factor of anything. It could be 1.5 for the new iPad. But it does seem weird. That would be a 1536x1152. Yeah that's weird. I think it's a lot more plausible that it would be either 1920x1440 or 1440x1080. (scale factors of 1.875 or 1.40625)
