beautiful and captivating writing. tokyo is definitely one of those places capable of absorbing visitors in its mythical reputation. and i think you've conveyed that experience better than anyone i've ever talked to about it.

Packing lists offer such an enigmatic glimpse into a person's life. It's so interesting to discover what others consider to be unessential, or important enough to physically carry with them for months. Your packing list is particularly inspirational, a reminder that there's so much it's possible to live without.

Great article, Julie. When I visited Puerto Rico, I rented a car and over the course of a week made a big circuit around and through the island (along some of the routes mentioned in your itinerary). There're so many beautiful places--tons of lofty ocean vistas and gorgeous interior mountains. I was constantly pulling over and jumping out of the car to capture the spectacular scenery!

gorgeous collection!
these roads seem wildly picturesque, so i'm not sure if it can compare, but the cabot trail on cape breton island stands out in my memories as one of the loveliest roads i've encountered so far.

Mountains do have a certain powerful mystique, so I suppose it's only natural they would have a place in the realm of the sacred. It was nice to be reminded of the spiritual aspect of such destinations--it's not something I think about very often.
