http://www.jeffnolan.com/blog/ : A Few Thoughts on Social Media Monitoring

Jeff, you've done a good job of summarizing the SMM/SCRM landscape, but I'd expect nothing less... I always found the lists (and there are many) of the SMM tools amusing because it's easy to put 100 company names on a page, but the variance between the products showed how early the space was. There was rarely much differentiation between enterprise-grade SMM platforms and lightweight/free twitter influence or analytics tools. Indexers, consumer search tools and enterprise apps would end up on the same list. We hit a point of consolidation prior to segregation by the analyst community (SCRM as a label being the notable exception). 2011 will be interesting here - will we see more consolidation? Will we start to see some smaller vendors fold? Will some go narrow and deep to find a profitable niche? Best, Ari

VC Adventure : There is no “Foundry Group Boulder Signaling Problem”

Seth - glad to see you talk about this openly and directly. Its a legitimate concern and certainly that comes up in conversation with investors and entrepreneurs in other areas that are looking at local deals, but the data you provided really demonstrates a different reality (which is great to see). I'm also glad to see Foundry care so much about the topic in the interest of the ecosystem/community. I'll be sure to point people to this post when I hear the whispers next time.

VC Adventure : When is your start-up no longer a start-up?

For me, its not about # of employees or which services you use - its whether you fundamentally feel the business is running and sustainable. I think the two consecutive quarters of profitability are good indicators, but more importantly - are you making money and can you sustain yourself into the future. Its the transition from building the foundation to adding floors perhaps. I'd still consider Tesla a start-up, FWIW.

VC Adventure : My Big Mac

Stuff I use: Dropbox for file sync to the cloud and locally. Haven't tried to map it to a network share at the same time however. Quicksilver for keyboard shortcuts and app links - super helpful Install both iWork and Office 2008 - some stuff just does't translate right (mostly PPTX files) and its good to have both. I still prefer working in Pages and Keynote but sometimes you just need the MS stuff. Apple Mail & iCal - its a love hate thing but it does work reasonably well with Exchange which I know you are on. Some folks use Entourage for calendaring and native apps for everything else. MobileMe - yes, sign up for this so you can have the 3 way push-based sync between the native apps, the cloud, and your iPhone. Great insurance policy and backup solution for address books, calendars, etc.

Paul Kedrosky: Infectious Greed : On the Noxiousness of United Airlines

I'm fairly convinced that whenever UAL oversells a flight (which happens all day long) they always move to close the doors early to avoid facing the music (granting tickets/passes/hotel vouchers) to oversold customers. I've had this happen to me on a flight to Palm Springs (again, last flight out) - they bumped the departure time up 20 minutes so they could close the doors early (if you are a 1k or PE you know the drill). This all goes back to the systemic damage UAL did to its company after 9/11 w.r.t its staffing. Been a terrible place to work/fly since. Now they are making record profits on our backs to boot.

Feld Thoughts : Trying to Help AT&T Get Better in Boulder

I think some will stay and some will go (that pesky 2 year contract). If 30% of the network load dropped off AT&T, presumably the stability would improve and people would be happier as-is. If the stability doesn't improve after the load drops, then we have to point our guns at Apple too.

Some analysts and reports have suggested the phone itself is the problem (a bad chipset, etc). The thing I don't buy about this is that my 1st generation iPhone did not work AT ALL at home in north boulder, but I switched it to TMO (gave it to my wife) and it works great. call drops are non-issue for her. I suppose it could be a combination of an overloaded network/tower infrastructure that can't do call hand-offs, or flawed 3G/EDGE switching but this is not an issue for other devices and other networks.

I also live in NB, and after talking to an AT&T technical support person (L2 or L3) they looked at the distance from the nearest tower and my house, and sure enough AT&T doesn't have a tower any closer than Jay and foothills area, so we are on the far edge of coverage and the downtown tower won't reach well either. I have above ground power lines in front of my house facing east (where the tower is) and basically can't use the phone. Prior to the 850 overlay I got "no service" or 1 bar, now I can see 5 bars but as soon as you pick up the phone and try to use it, it drops out badly. Still not usable. Until they put in a new tower, north boulder is fucked. Ironically, if you are in Dakota Ridge, you are OK...

Great comments! I think you've highlighted a key point about how much branding plays a factor, and also the risk/reward of owning the whole stack. It worked against Apple for along time, until it didn't.

one : IP Address Brokers; Please Stand Up

Any cloud developer/service operator should be aware of the inherent limitations of the shared environment, and that runs up and down the stack from hardware to app-layer. The biggest benefit is the instant elasticity of resources, IMO, but clouds come with a lot of issues and you've done a good job highlighting one of them (IP block issues). Are there any real cases where an entire cloud netblock got blocked by a popular web API service for abuse? Would be interesting to see how that worked, why they decided to block at the IP level vs account level, etc. I'm wondering if this is just moving the problem from one IP to another. If an IP broker is passing API traffic for a bunch of clients, do they run the same risk that their netblock(s) could be blacklisted? Would they have to police usage of their services like email providers do? I like the idea of the service-level authentication/access as the last gate. Twitter actually seems to get this, they are moving from IP whitelists on the search API to account level access on streams.

StartupCFO : A lifestyle business

Nice to see some acknowledgement coming from Rick now that he's worn both hats. I heard the term "lifestyle business" thrown around just the other day in reference to a company that was making less than $10M/year. I was surprised. This term is generally toxic and I'm all for throwing shoes at VCs that choose to label a business as such because they don't believe its going to return the fund in the next 3-5 years. FWIW, I think its an appropriate label for a small business run by 1-2 owners that either breaks-even or sheds off a little profit but isn't being aggressively managed for growth and scale. If the owners are working 30 hours a week so they can maintain 3 day weekends at the vacation house, well yeah, that's a lifestyle business. Karim - good insight. Totally agree.
