Big Hollywood : 'Star Wars: Episode One - The Phantom Menace 3D' Review: Jar Jar Aside, Prequel Still Has Merit

Wow! It's been decades. I looked them up on Wiki*.* before writing my post above. Made me cringe a little reading the plot. How to summarize? Think of Narnia, subtract Aslan, add HAL 9000, stir, add a dash of Tears for Algernon. If that doesn't work for you, then just think of "Nanny McPhee versus Cthulhu."

CavCapt8, You have a solid point. The movies were fun. I see the critique as more of a push back against Lucas political/social/spiritual statements. Some artists attempt to reflect truth and beauty. Some try to create truth and beauty. Guess which ones resonant with people? Guess which ones are nihilist bastages?

Agree 100% Hank. When the word 'Midichlorians' was uttered, it was "..as if millions of voices suddenly cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced." Then, to make things even worse, we immediately see the immaculate conception of Anakin by the Force. So, in a few brief scenes, Lucas demystifies the Force into a biological function AND introduces a stunning miracle of a virgin birth. That was not vision or creativity, though Lucas probably though he was making a profound statement. That was artistic confusion and spiritual bankruptcy. Going down that path must have been prompted by the same evil spirit that possessed Lucas to try to change "Han shot first." btw, I always thought that the concept of midichlorians was sort of a rip off of L'Engle's use of mitochondria in the Charles Wallace Murry character in "A Wind in the Door".

I recently watched Phantom Menace at home on DVD. It was worse than awful, it was boring. The one thing about the movie that was engaging was the portrayal of the Jedi Order at full strength as opposed to the remnants show in episodes 4,5 and 6. But, even at full strength, the Jedi seemed a bit.... clueless..... I guess the Dark side really was powerful.....

Big Hollywood : Oscar Favorite 'The Artist' a Silent Antidote to Modern Cynicism

FTA "Snarky cynicism has taken hold of our culture like a face-hugger from the “Alien” franchise, planting embryos of despair and nihilism in our bodies to fester and grow until they emerge from our chests (and the chest-bursters’ faces are plastered with smirks reminiscent of Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert)." BAM!

Big Hollywood : Good News: Hollywood Wants to Screw Up 'Death Wish'

I disagree with your reasoning. There is nothing wrong with people merely voting your comment down without leaving an argument. This is a public arena with commonly known rules of engagement. But, to answer your question, yes, we have a right to defend ourselves from aggressive violence. In my opinion, that right is strongest at the point at which we are receiving a violent act. But once the moment passes, it is better to let the proper authorities handle the matter. There is no hypocrisy in enjoying a movie such as Death Wish. If so, then isn't every movie celebrating immorality of any sort wrong? 'Death Wish' is speech. It called (calls) attention to the fact that the proper authorities were failing at their God delegated tasks of defending and AVENGING the innocent.

You say that you are distressed by 'knee-jerk negative votes' to posts; yet you started off a previous note with "I realize that because he votes differently than you, you therefore have reason to hate him..." Seems that you are trolling for a reaction, not craving civil discourse. For the record, conservatives don't hate liberals and leftists (or anyone). We really just want to be left alone by the leftist/socialists. Why can't socialists accept simple opt-out provisions to social programs or, even better, just create their own little utopias isolated from the rest of the unenlightened?

Commentary Magazine : Optimistic or Pessimistic About America: Jonah Goldberg

Thanks for posting this, Jonah! I've been waiting a long time to hear your perspective on American decline. I want to hear more from you on this topic. I am also glad to see the tactical failure of Obama's initiatives. But for true optimism to take root, it seems that we need to, at the very least, reverse some of the dangerous trends that we are following. Especially our debt.
