I was horrified and disgusted when I heard the story about the explosion yesterday. I really didn't think it could get any worse, but I guess I was wrong.

I'm curious what is considered an "Incident". I ride the 358 daily, and there are some sketchy people on board. I have never seen anything violent, though. The 7 on the other hand is a bus that I would not ride on unless I had to.

I don't think anything the NCAA has come up with gives us a national championship that is any less controversial than the old polls. At least when we had the polls, we had rivalries in many of the bowl games and a whole lot of tradition. Now we have top programs playing more games so they can fit in some Div 1b and blow them out to pad their record. The BCS computer loves big stats and, as long as you are undefeated, it doesn't really care that those stats came against a nothing program.

Two years ago, I requested and received salary data from Seattle Public Schools. At that time, the average salary for a teacher in the Seattle Public Schools is just under $71,000 per year (a 10 month year with 7 paid holidays). The median salary is $62,000 and the maximum classroom teacher salary being just over $88,000 per year. The starting salary for a teacher is $31,000 which isn't going to make anyone rich, but is not out of line for a starting salary in a lot of industries. The average salary is skewed upward because we have so many teachers making over $80,000 per year. This is the result of seniority-based determination for layoffs etc.

I'm tired of the argument that we don't pay teachers enough. With the exception of very new teachers, we most certainly pay enough.

There are a lot of problems in our schools. Two that hang over our heads are the high cost spent on administration and the seniority-based teacher contracts that keep higher cost (and often less effective) senior teachers in the classroom at the expense of our students.

Any member of the ILWU who was involved in criminal activity during their protests should never be allowed to work at the grain terminal. I hope that is in the contract.
