I'll keep thinking for all the slaves to dogma. It's funny that you say you need no one to think for you, because I need no one to pray for me.

Atheist Revolution : My First Abortion

Thank you for sharing your account, vjack. I realize that this may be painful for you to share publically. I have always been reticent about abortion, but it is stories like this which explain why I am still pro-choice. Abstinence education is fraud. It should be evaluated like any other form of birth control. If you compared the number of times teenagers pledged to be abstinent and had sex anyway and got pregnant to the number of failures for other forms of birth control, abstinence education proponents could see what a joke their preferred method really is. However, like most religious concepts, it's impossible for abstinence to fail you - you can only fail abstinence. How ridiculous - teenagers have all of these hormones in their bodies and yet the religious say that sex is a disgrace and shameful. So how did the sexual urges get there, people? Either God disagrees with you...or God had nothing to do with it.

Atheist Revolution : Can Atheists Participate in Interfaith Dialogue?

100,000? Do you 100,000 documents (not from the Bible) attesting to the fact that Jesus existed and did all the things proclaimed that he did in the Bible? If not, then I guess we really can't have a conversation about Christianity, can we?

Does it escape you that the death tolls from the Crusades to the era of Stalin and Mao increased only because there was a greater population of people on the planet during the 20th century than during the Middle Ages? And why are there so many more people on the planet now? Science! Plus, Hitler was not really an atheist. Please do some research before you make aimless, poorly-considered statements.

Again, what? Presenting alternative beliefs and demonstrating error is not speaking to people's anger. Please allow me to ask you this: does demonstrating the error in prejudice only speak to people's anger? And are there just some things in life that you should be angry about? It would be nice if we could all gather 'round in a circle singing "kumbaya", but there are a lot of misconceptions that have to be corrected first. Don't think of me as arousing anger - rather, I am reaching out to theists by letting them know that I exist, that I want to be recognized as a caring and moral person. When suffering will not relent, winning hearts should be secondary to establishing justice, though I agree that some measure of sympathy and empathy are critical in such efforts. However, this does not mean that it is the skeptic who should be a doormat - but rather both theists and atheists should work together to reach understanding. And if this requires anger to reach that realization? Fine - anger can be healthy. You have a misplaced animus against anger - it is a step toward the "winning of hearts" that you seek.

None of those are negative things, imissbubby. Encouraging, presenting, and attempting are all present tense action-oriented words. They're positive - they're trying to do something. These are the things that a lot of us believe in. Rational thought? Why yes, I believe that is beneficial and important. Alternatives to belief in the supernatural? Yes, for many struggling with the inconsistencies of certain religious belief systems, this can be extremely helpful. Demonstrating the error of atheist stereotypes? This is a great positive thing: we are here, we're not going away, and we have to coexist. Shouldn't we find a way to do that? None of these things on vjack's list are negative. You just don't like them very much, which is really too bad.

Atheist Revolution : Did Jesus Abolish the Old Testament?
