I think well-thought-out emails show mutual respect for each others' times. Personally, the more information the better, at the beginning of the project or task. It allows me to organize my thoughts, form a timeline and the proper steps to execute it. Once I am able to visualize the entire project through to completion then I can (usually) ask the right follow-up questions in one or two emails instead of several.
