I specifically left the Dan Rather Rap off because the soundbite begins with "Desperation, despair...." I didn't think that'd be the right message to send immediately following the interview. :P

I believe that's a wallpaper from Jagex's official website. I made that article image last year for an interview I did with Henrique Olifiers.

Sorry about that. Gordon was having some trouble with his mic, and I basically had to run every filter in the book on the audio to get it to come out as clear as it is.

Thank you for the feedback, Brian. For my part, if anything I used to be too positive. Back in the day I ran a fansite, of all things. But, as you said, I've gotten very jaded over the years, which to my mind was through no great fault of my own. When it comes right down to it, I'm a gamer who enjoys talking about games, and I'd like to think that I give credit where credit is due. Maybe the fact that I haven't been giving out much credit lately is just a reflection of my opinion of the current state of the industry. The gaming industry as a whole, and the MMO genre in particular, has been growing increasingly stale with each passing year. When budgets for games are skyrocketing past 50 million dollars, no one dares to take a risk on reinventing the wheel and losing that kind of money if they get it wrong. As a result, long-term fans such as myself have essentially been playing DikuMUD over, and over, and over again, with a new coat of paint on it and some minor tweaks to the formula every few years. But I respect your opinion that we should include more positive segments in the show, and if you have any suggestions on more cheerful items you'd like us to discuss, feel free to drop us a line at podcast@mmogamer.com.

We apologize for the delay, Katy. As Siam said, we are still to this date waiting for the prizes to be sent from CCP. We aren't quite sure what the delay is, but we've been trying to get it sorted out for the past several weeks. You know as much as we do at this point.

They only showed a few areas, one of which was entirely on board a spaceship, which is by its very nature confined, and the other two both seemed to show somewhat close-quarters areas, with a clear path to follow. Could have just been the things they had the most polish on to show off in the demo, not an indication of the game as a whole... but I would have liked to have seen some wide open country, myself.

The MMO Gamer : E3: Is Anyone Out There With Testicular Fortitude?

That's the thing though, we're not talking about nuclear missiles in Iran or Senate confirmation hearings on Supreme Court justices, we're talking about games. To me, gaming journalism should have a certain amount of joy to it. The purpose of games is to entertain, to lift you out of the skulldrudgery of your ordinary day. Nobody you talk to ever says they got into the gaming industry for the women or the money, they all say they got into it because it's what they loved to do. But, few of them can talk candidly about what they love to do, because of the realities of how much these games cost to make. Interviewing a company about an upcoming MMO these days is almost like sitting down with a defense contractor to discuss their latest billion dollar government black project. No one wants to take the risk of going off message and potentially costing the company money. I don't think that's going to change until these games no longer take 40 million dollars to produce, unfortunately.

Good points. But, the counterpoint is, how can I effectively create interesting conversation when most of the people I speak to are forbidden to venture off the script? "Interesting" and "What the producers/PR department want them to say" are often at opposite ends of the spectrum. On that note, the worst possible interview I can do is when somebody from PR is actually sitting right there at the table while we're speaking. Then *I* start getting drawn into the script. You get that feeling that if you don't spend X percent of the interview advertising the game they're going to stick you on the blacklist... and without access we'd have to turn this place into a rant site.

It was a fair criticism. The first page of Part One had almost nothing to do with gaming whatsoever. I just left it in because it was Paul Barnett being Paul Barnett. If you edit out him going off on tangents you might as well not even bother interviewing him.
