In the book, Atticus gets Jem an air rifle for Christmas AND tells Jem he can shoot all the bluejays he wants, just don't kill mockingbirds. (hmmm) Mockingbirds only make music for us and to shoot them would be a sin. I believe it was Miss Maudie who explained to Jem and Scout why their father no longer hunted, even though he was well-known as an expert shot as a boy.
