RagingRev : Tebow, The Bible, and the Christian Persecution Complex

It's a game I'll never understand the appeal of. I do think he's genuine if still somewhat immature. I can't deny that he's likely a good role model as well. As my friend Guy would say - it's always the fan-club that causes all the trouble.

If it happens in any case you not only need to reexamine the god you believe in, but also the priorities in your own life.

RagingRev : Popular Misconceptions: Knowing Truth

I don't think you understand the graphic model properly - it's stating that Knowledge is defined as the things that you believe that are true. Belief + Truth = Knowledge Belief - Truth = Belief Truth - Belief = Ignorance

Atheist Revolution : Leave the Nativity Scenes Alone: Objections From Atheists

*typo in the first sentence - praiser - should be prayer* I'm having lunch with a pastor this Friday to discuss a Bible Study and nativity scene he is helping to put on at the local public middle school. I'm going to try reason to appeal first...then go from there...I hope it doesn't turn ugly.
RagingRev : Praxis Presup Debate ft. Matt Oxley and Brian Knapp

"Another way of looking at the problem of induction is that the logic that we use in induction is based upon repeated observations and you cannot arrive at certainty of knowledge despite the number of repeated observations made." This is more or less the point I was attempting to make. I don't know that my experiences and inductions from those experiences will always lead me to appropriate conclusions because the laws of physics might well change, making my prior knowledge null and void. Perhaps my method wasn't the best, but that is exactly what I was going for.

RagingRev : Facing the Reality of Death

Thanks Kevin, i appreciate your comments - they bring up many valid issues with faith. Guilt is the byproduct of beliefs, not the byproduct of reality - unfortunately reality is not comfortable enough for most to live in.

Atheist Revolution : The Pull of Misanthropy

Strangely, the only arena in which I become apathetic and misanthropic is in the political arena...and even now I'm seeing that many people are waking up to reality: Politicians are owned by corporate interests...even opposing candidates are owned by the same interests. As far as politics goes I'm done until I see a major change, I've done my best to educate those around me and I've given up on working any further toward it. In the case of evolution, by and large the issue is with ignorance. Educate someone enough and generally speaking they will accept evolution or admit cognitive dissonance and that they don't desire to know any different than they already do....and so I work at that and it is worth the frustration. Same goes for atheism etc. Keep working, it's working brother.
That's what I'd like to see happen..and I'd also like to see us use our differences to raise money and awareness...sponsored debates with the proceeds going to a food pantry? Why not?

I'd have to have lots of the same caveats to my willingness to participate...the goal would have to be solely to provide assistance to people that needed it. IF a church wants to feed people but requires first that people listen to a sermon or say a prayer then I'd find that act despicable...I don't mind making offers and I fully comprehend the desire to share your faith (we both know this quite well) but helping people should never be contingent on shared faith. Those willing and capable of doing this are going to be exceedingly rare.

RagingRev : (Another) Former Atheist Embraces Faith

saying there are bad reasons for something doesn't actually mean that there are also good reasons for something. Your conclusion to that fact is faulty.

Empirical Evidence is about the only \"good\" reason I believe I could find to accept your faith, IF that exists then you are right - good reasons exist, if they don't then there only exist bad reasons as far as I'm concerned.

RagingRev : Science: Humbling the Faithful

I think it's relevant as it confirms the bias that occurs with all religions. Believers will prove to themselves what it is that they believe, Confirmation Bias is as strong a tool of evangelism as anything - and it's the main reason that people are encouraged to give "testimonies" of their faith, as sharing one's story of conversion with many people will eventually resonate with one of those people, beginning the cycle again.
