Atheist Revolution : People Really Enjoy Shopping?

I agree with that, my company is doing it too, last year they laid off a department and now my department does that job, they are going to do it again this coming year, 3 jobs, one wage. I know I'm looking elsewhere, and so is half of the rest of those who do the job I do. My recent post Not the life I want.

I love shopping. I prefer to do it early in the morning if possible, before the idiots head out. I used to love the crowds more than I do now. I get frustrated too easily. I have the hardest time in Costco if it's busy. I don't understand the mentality of a set of parents going there, with their 5 kids in tow. How about one of you go out and one stay home and watch the kids. I often find myself yelling "does this one have an owner or a leash?" As for customer service I've noticed a decline of it lately, which to me is shocking, because usually when the economy sucks, service goes up, trying to win your dollars. I demand good customer service though, it's probably because I have worked in client service fields for a long time.

Atheist Revolution : Idiot of the Week: Who is the Idiot Here?

Pat's comments were morally wrong according to his own religion. He's a dick. That being said, his comments make sense for some couples financially. My elderly grandmother still lives with us, and she regularly goes to her local senior center. We talked one time about how she is seeing more and more senior couples choose to live together, or maintain separate residences instead of getting married so that if one spouse needs long term care they will qualify for more financial assistance, and the couple won't be forced to lose everything, because only one person's income will be counted toward government assistance. She also knows a couple who chose to divorce so that the husband could get help with her care. They couldn't afford the help she needed but they didn't qualify if both incomes were counted, but hers alone did. The tragedy here is that the party of "sanctity of marriage" has created fiscal policies that don't favor marriage and help with expensive medical care.
Atheist Revolution : The Joy of Submitting to Authority

"The Lemming Condition" (Good book btw). I am not a scientist, not even a little, but I would suspect that it is part of our evolution and instinct to want to pick leaders and follow them. If society was full of leaders and no followers or vice versa I would suspect we wouldn't get much accomplished. It's just too bad religious leaders have exploited that need for millennia instead of humanity picking leaders who are interested in progressing society instead of profit.
I hope anyone who has ever had something like this done to them puts their story out there. People need to know that this crap goes on and respond to it. It's pretty ballsy. Imagine if atheists started sending "there is no after life, but enjoy the good memories" cards to random Christians from obituaries.
I did a whole post about a Jehovah's Witness sending me a religious sympathy card complete with some of their pamphlets after my grandfather died. She sent it to the funeral home, and they, thinking the card was a real sympathy card from a decent person who knew the family, forwarded it on to me. I have since hidden the post, but yeah, I was extremely angry to say the least.
Atheist Revolution : An Atheist Manifesto

I remember reading this years ago in college. I had forgotten about it. I also agree that atheism has always been there and even, there have been those of us discussing about the dangers of religion. The internet just gives a more perfect forum to come together and makes it more visible. I just got a nook copy, worth reading again after all these years.
Atheist Revolution : The Price of Hero Worship in the Atheist Movement

I think when you and I were younger and "new" in our atheism there weren't as many conferences or even as many vocal and prominent atheists. I think the internet has made a huge difference in the ability to gather people together in the name of atheism. There weren't "meet - ups", or TAM, etc. I think the access to other atheists and atheist discussion has opened up considerably and it seems inevitable that there would emerge celebrity within that "world". I remember going to a Star Trek convention (yeah, that kind of nerd) in college and not hero worshiping the stars in attendance but being excited to see celebrities whose work I had appreciated and hear them talk about something I enjoyed. I have never really hero worshiped celebrity, but there were members in attendance who were completely enamored by the celebrity. I suppose I would prefer people hero worship scientists and prominent atheists instead of the pope, if they have to worship at all. Even if I find it hard to comprehend myself.
