I am also a tax preparer and I also feel there should be some test for competency. I also have amended several H&R Block, Jackson-Hewitt, and Liberty Tax service returns. I think the problem with Turbo tax is that they use definitions that the average individual doesn't understand the meaning. I also think this push by H&R Block is to get people to focus on other headlines. They are currently under review for their fee structure in their instant IRA business.

I think there is a lot of wisdom by the CPAs in not allowing their members to benefit from referring their clients to financial businesses they have an interest in. H&R Block is also involved in mortgages and IRAs, so they have a vested interest in referring their tax clients to their other non-tax services and the consumer pays extra fees. H&R Block's IRA business charged more in annual fees than people earned.
