Big Hollywood : Obama's Need To Control Starts With Destroying Limbaugh

That's part of the point. The other part of it is to distract from the performance of the stock market and the tea parties being held, you know, stuff that actually matters. It's the two minutes hate, and this week we have Rush Limbaugh standing in for Emmanuel Goldstein.

Thanks for reminding me that conservatives are just as vehement about controlling other people's lives as liberals are. You people disgust me.

The very FIRST principle of libertarianism is that coercion of others is wrong. If you can reconcile your belief that it's OK to arrest and jail people for possession of a chemical with that principle, go ahead and try. Otherwise, go fix yourself a nice cup of STFU.

No, actually I don't. A libertine would say drugs are good and everyone should do them. A libertarian would say drugs may be bad and morally wrong but the state has no business deciding for everyone collectively. Nothing pisses me off more than a collectivist who thinks he's a libertarian. Get your head out of your ass or stop saying you're one.

Barack Obama thinks there should be a tradeoff between individual rights and the community too. Once you cross that line, where does it end? You should read Hayek's The Road to Serfdom. We're on it, and attitudes like yours are as much to blame as any leftist in a Che Guevara t-shirt.

Conservatives understand that welfare is bad because it creates incentives to not work. They recognize that high taxation is bad because it creates incentives against earning money and entrepreneurship. But judging from this thread, they don't understand that prohibition creates incentives to commit crimes and form organized crime cartels. No drug would ever cost as much on the free market as it does on the black market, and legal merchants have the recourse of cops and courts to handle disputes, without resorting to pulling a Glock.

Are you in favor of gun control? After all, guns can be used to commit crimes. When a gun gets used against an innocent person, that person's rights are violated. I expect that with your attitude, you believe that guns should not be legal and widely available either.

The question we are asking is if prohibition ameliorates this harm or if it contributes to it? Would the people you knew in the "scene" have been better off if the police had locked them up instead? How would that have helped? What about the ones who DIDN'T end up addicted? Should they have done time for their indiscretions too? Would that have improved their lives any?

I wonder wh we have so many armed and dangerous suspects around. It's almost like we're creating a vast black market and encouraging criminal behavior. Participants in a black market cannot go to law enforcement for protection or other legal disputes. Is it any wonder they feel the need to be armed to the teeth and to use violence to support their enterprise?

If you bothered to read any of the articles I pointed you at, the "myth" is not that babies suffered from health problems at birth and during early childhood, indeed they do. The myth is that the mother's crack addiction had a long term effect on the babies cognition and brain activity after they grew up, and the result of the studies was that, after controlling for other factors, no cognitive damage coud statistically be found.

OK, then, as long as you're admitting openly that you're a collectivist who wants the state to decide upon one choice that's deemed best for everyone. Knowing what we know about PROHIBITION and it's example with alcohol should make us question whether prohibition works in this case as well.

Drugs are already available. Prohibition is not doing an effective job of keeping people from getting drugs, so the availability point is moot. I personally know many people who use drugs recreationally, and it is a minority of those who become addicted and need to seek treatment. In my experience, the myth of the natural progression being abuse is just that, a myth. Believe it or not, there are indeed people who use heroin recreationally without becoming addicts. All I've been getting at in this thread is that the harms caused by prohibition are indeed real, and what we are doing is NOT WORKING. The time has come to try a different approach, and if it proves to be a mistake, well, we can always resume prohibition. The definition of insanity is attempting to do the same thing over and over again, and expecting a different result. Let's just try something else, because it really can't be much worse than what we're doing now.

Nothing else in their lives changes when they go to the clinic? Look, I'm not trying to say meth isn't bad. It is. But the harm from criminalizing it is not alleviating the harm caused by doing it, so it might be time to find a better solution.

Oh yeah, because alcoholics don't take years to return to normal, and have no lingering effects at all. You should spend some time visiting with alcoholics before you make these comments. I've spent time with recovering heroin junkies and alcoholics, and if there's a difference, it's that the alcoholics are in worse shape.
