The myth is that the mother's crack addiction had a long term effect on the babies cognition and brain activity after they grew up, and the result of the studies was that, after controlling for other factors, no cognitive damage coud statistically be found. Prohibition is not doing an effective job of keeping people from getting drugs, so the availability point is moot. I personally know many people who use drugs recreationally, and it is a minority of those who become addicted and need to seek treatment. In my experience, the myth of the natural progression being abuse is just that, a myth. Believe it or not, there are indeed people who use heroin recreationally without becoming addicts. All I've been getting at in this thread is that the harms caused by prohibition are indeed real, and what we are doing is NOT WORKING. The time has come to try a different approach, and if it proves to be a mistake, well, we can always resume prohibition. The definition of insanity is attempting to do the same thing over and over again, and expecting a different result. Let's just try something else, because it really can't be much worse than what we're doing now.
