The Firmware Umbrella : FAQ

For some unknown reason Apple has left iOS 4.1 open for 3GS. You can only restore to other iOS versions you have saved SHSH for.

The Firmware Umbrella : FAQ

No.__And to elaborate on my answer: you wasted your money unless you can get hold of a sim-card from the original carrier to activate the iPhone.

Thanks for the input. Its not the actual upgrading process thats the issue but rather what 'benefits' there are?

OK many thanks. Think I'll stay at 4.1 for the time being and wait for 4.3 JB untethered.

Please excuse if this is posted in the wrong 'section'. Have been away from the community for a while but what are the advantages moving from OS4.1 to OS4.2.1? Is OS4.2.1 faster compared to OS4.1? Are there some major updates/exploites that are made/closed? The household has a 3GS and a 4 both factory unlocked on OS4.1 so only require the JB. Is it recommend to wait for the 4.3JB untethered? Also have a 3G on OS3.1.2/ 04.26.08 which requires ultrasn0w unlock. Will moving to OS4.2.1 give same performance as present OS? (have earlier tried OS4.0.2 which was no success speed-wise). Many thanks for any comments :)

With the risk of belabouring the issue, I now know its possible to upgrade from 3.1.3 straight to 4.1, thanks to FRANK55's reply. My 'objection' to Dhlizard's reply is it doesnt answer my Q. I mean, if he had started his reply with somethng like: 'yes its possible but suggest to wait for 4.2 release...' then it would have made sense. On its own its not much help in regard to my Q, is it?

Appreciate the advice of waiting for the 4.2 release - makes sense and will do so. But my original Q was/is: can I go straight from 3.1.3 to 4.1 using pwnagetool? Am then given a answer to wait for 4.2 but not a word about my Q. Still no offense intended but for the sake of the debat/argument, that answer/reply is completely useless on its own.

Thanks. Will try it as soon as my daughter returns from college - shes the Mac owner. As I understand it this is only possible on a Mac - going from 3.1.3 to 4.1 - without updating the baseband?

Thanks. Know this site and have read its possible but am a bit worried about you last remark 'goodluck' :( Like I said I use both belt & suspenders (some would say: being spoon fed), so looking for a feedback of somebody who has actually gone from 3.1.3 to 4.1 using pwnagetool and maintained the ultrasn0w unlock option or from 3.1.3 to to ios 4.0.1/2?

Hi guys/gals Been away from the community for the past 3 months and lost track of things :( Have read the last 10 pages of posts without finding the answer & will admit, I use both belt &suspenders when it comes to upgrading a iPhone. Have a 3GS, baseband 05.12.01, running 3.1.3. JB by Spirit/unlocked via ultrasn0w. Have SHSH for 4.0 through to 4.1 saved both at Cydia and locally on PC via TinyUmbrella. Would like to upgrade to 4.xx. Have access to a Mac (daughter's PC -is it call PC when a Mac?). My Q: Can I got straight from 3.1.3 to 4.1 using Pwnagetools/ Mac without updating baseband -as I need the ultrsn0w unlock?

I agree. Especially when using apps, though standby time is better. Would like the option to go back to 1.0-1 or 0.93 via repo - if nothing else just to test which is best for my iDewvice (appreantly no 2 iPhones are similar???)

As u r on 3G if u feel 4.0 is slowing u down u can always revert to 3.1.3. Just do the same and 'point' to Redsn0w.
