For some unknown reason Apple has left iOS 4.1 open for 3GS. You can only restore to other iOS versions you have saved SHSH for.

No.__And to elaborate on my answer: you wasted your money unless you can get hold of a sim-card from the original carrier to activate the iPhone.

Great. Thanks, just the sort of feedback I was looking for.

Thanks for the input.
Its not the actual upgrading process thats the issue but rather what 'benefits' there are?

OK many thanks. Think I'll stay at 4.1 for the time being and wait for 4.3 JB untethered.

Please excuse if this is posted in the wrong 'section'.
Have been away from the community for a while but what are the advantages moving from OS4.1 to OS4.2.1?
Is OS4.2.1 faster compared to OS4.1?
Are there some major updates/exploites that are made/closed?

The household has a 3GS and a 4 both factory unlocked on OS4.1 so only require the JB. Is it recommend to wait for the 4.3JB untethered?

Also have a 3G on OS3.1.2/ 04.26.08 which requires ultrasn0w unlock.
Will moving to OS4.2.1 give same performance as present OS? (have earlier tried OS4.0.2 which was no success speed-wise).

Many thanks for any comments :)

With the risk of belabouring the issue, I now know its possible to upgrade from 3.1.3 straight to 4.1, thanks to FRANK55's reply.
My 'objection' to Dhlizard's reply is it doesnt answer my Q.
I mean, if he had started his reply with somethng like: 'yes its possible but suggest to wait for 4.2 release...' then it would have made sense.
On its own its not much help in regard to my Q, is it?

Appreciate the advice of waiting for the 4.2 release - makes sense and will do so.
But my original Q was/is: can I go straight from 3.1.3 to 4.1 using pwnagetool?
Am then given a answer to wait for 4.2 but not a word about my Q.

Still no offense intended but for the sake of the debat/argument, that answer/reply is completely useless on its own.

Thanks. Will try it as soon as my daughter returns from college - shes the Mac owner.
As I understand it this is only possible on a Mac - going from 3.1.3 to 4.1 - without updating the baseband?
