That assumes that the battery works. Phone + snowbank equals dead battery. It was working at 9 a.m. (four rings means the phone is on). At the time, I didn't think to use Find My iPhone because I had assumed that I had left it at home. When I got home, I tried calling it again and it went straight to voicemail (meaning phone was off or had a dead battery). I tried Find My iPhone but MobileMe said the phone was not connected to a data network.

My iPhone delivers mail to me and helps me navigate with a UI that I'm used to. Additionally, I'm unfortunately a bit entrenched in the ecosystem so leaving iPhone would mean losing quite a bit of paid software (which is by and large worth the cost).
