Matthew Bennett's Blog : 7 questions to discover your passion in life

Hi Katherine, thanks for leaving a comment. That's right, we don't want any wishy-washiness! So a) no, you can't, no multiple passion, and b) hmm, don't think so. Seems everyone has one but agree some people have lost it so deeply that it might take them a while to find it again. A bit more involved a process than our '7 questions'. In fact, just last night I went for a beer with good friend of mine here in Murcia (38-year old woman, 18 years doing accounting) and had this conversation too. She thought that accounting was her true passion but then we went through the 7 questions and she answered 'no' to five out of seven, so that's definitely not it. I can feel a 'Passion (VI)' post coming on, something like: 'How to start rediscovering a lost passion'. Keep thinking…

Hi John, thanks for your comment. And what a good, challenging comment it is. I like those. Thanks for sharing your experiences. Let's see: Live blogging: I haven't done a lot of academic research on this, of course, but I know I liked what the Guardian and Al Jazeera have done with this during the Arab revolts. I loved it, even. Was hooked, for the reasons I've explained above. Set a news junkie to catch a news junkie and all that. And technically, if you've already got a blog set up, it's really easy: it's just updating the same blog post throughout the day with what you find. and think is important for your readers The challenging bit is the selection of the material, of course. I read some posts on this over the weekend which you will enjoy too if you like this topic: 1) http://bit.ly/i4szz9 2) http://bit.ly/eVpFnX 3) http://bit.ly/hjszHf 4) http://bit.ly/hjszHf What do you mean by not mixing 'live' and 'ilnk'…? Knowing your readers: totally agree, of course. Will have to wait for this to evolve to find out who they are though, this is a brand new change of direction. I think I know my current regular readers quite well. After the links and live blogging, there are other parts of the new plan coming over the next few days. First I have to do what I'm going to do, then start to get to know the people who turn up to read it—my audience. It will be a pleasure. Last year I ran a reader survey with Google Docs which got some great responses and just last night was thinking of bringing that back for this new project. You're very welcome to stick around for the fun!

Yeah, could do, although I think the key is not popularity or page views or links or algorithms in this case. Algorithms can answer what's linked to, what's popular or what's being tweeted, but they can't answer the questions: "what's the story?" + "what's important?" I've seen Postrank before but thanks for the reminder, I'll check them out again.

Hmm, that's an interesting idea, I'd have to think about how to present it. Also, I find that a lot of the foreign affairs stuff in other languages is basically just copied from some English-language source. You really have to search for the good quality original stuff in Spanish or French, although it does exist, of course. Sometimes I spot blatant multi-lingual, non-attributed plagiarism and copying going on. No thanks, no links, no "er, this was really written by the Telegraph and we've just translated it". They do tend to have more original stuff first when the event is, say, in Cuba for Spanish or the Maghreb for French. But for something like Libya or Egypt or Afghan, most of it is copies or rewrites of stuff in English: we're talking about language as a news brake. I think one area where I could definitely be useful, and where you don't very often see many people or media organisations trying, is with multilingual news coverage. Can you not get a place in a European institution without an expensive master's degree then? What about just starting out on your own in some way? You're more than welcome to stick around if you like current affairs…!

Hi Joe! Well, there you go, I'm glad I can be of use to all you conference interpreters then! Welcome aboard! Spreading the word would be just wonderful. Was wondering today whether to add another layer to the homepage table for interesting foreign language articles—say, Spanish, French and Italian—which add more context to the development of the stories. Will think about it a bit more. For me, it doesn't feel like a big effort, I think that was one of the main points of Gary Vaynerchuk's book: if you get it right, the hard work doesn't feel like hard work, it just feels like fun and flows, and it can be useful to people, as you've pointed out. I'll work out how to earn a living from it later on sometime. What was the thing that most angered you about the student fee rises?

Matthew Bennett's Blog : 7 questions to discover your passion in life

Ok, Jonathan, we've tweeted about this. Looking forward to reading your next article and the other one you mentioned on Wednesday. Interesting ideas about movement from your previous pastor. If you don't work out where you're going first, though, you're just running round in circles, or bouncing around in the hope of finding whatever it is. This is inside you. One thing I've seen this week with all this is that once you realise what your (ONE) passion is, life seems to open itself up VERY quickly to allow you to start doing something about it almost immediately.

Hola Carmen, ¡muchas gracias!

Thanks Eva, I agree, it's much easier to see this for others than for ourselves. That's been the case with all of the conversations I've had this week and, of course with myself! There will be another list soon and other ways to participate. You can just start writing comments in English and Spanish (and maybe French soon) like this one, for a start :-). And we're still going to try and talk about interesting things!! Thanks for your support.

Matthew Bennett's Blog : Your passion in life (I): what should you be doing with your time here?

Hi Eva, thank you for your comment. REALLY GLAD it made you think a lot. Love it. I think the necessity of making life work is a huge part of why we don't seem to follow our passions so much, but stick to earning a living and the practical side of things. I would say 95% of people I've spoken to over the last week are not living their passion, and they know it. I like Gary Vaynerchuk's ideas because he doesn't bring it down to money vs. passion. First live and broadcast (in some way) your passion, then work out how to make some money through it. His book concentrates on how he's done it and how other people could do that if that might be their thing, but I think you're right, if you don't fixate on the internet, there are hundreds of ways someone could live and feel fulfilled by their passion. I'm a bit lost about your story, though: do you love politics but you're working as a flight attendant, or the other way round? Thank you for your encouragement and for following what I'm trying to do with all of this. You're very welcome to follow the next bit, too…
