Big Hollywood : 2009’s Vast Holiday Movie Wasteland: For Starters -- 'Avatar' Looks Freakin' Stupid

I'm looking forward to Sherlock Holmes and The Princess and the Frog. I doubt that the latter will be a masterpiece, and the jokes look pretty lame and juvenile, but I'm relieved to see Disney go back to tradional-looking animation..

Big Hollywood : For Conservative Movie Lovers: John Ford, John Wayne, and 'They Were Expendable' Part 6

This really has been a great series. I'm finally commenting because I love Robert Montgomery, who I hadn't even heard of up until a few years ago. Outside his performances, all I know about him I learned from the quick bios I've read online, so this article was especially welcomed. Montgomery's story seems pretty compelling to me - priviledged rich kid who suddenly found himself working blue-collar jobs after his father committed suicide (at least wiki says suicide, the link given here only says he died) and left his family penniless. Then you add in his Hollywood success, his WWII service, and even his politics, and you have a very talented and interesting man.

Big Hollywood : 'Poliwood': One-Sided, Occasionally Fascinating Look at Politics and Celebrity

I always try to seperate the actor from the role, but...they're not making it easy. Josh Lucas, for example. He was pretty charming in the cute movie Sweet Home Alabama, but knowing what he's like off-screen is a little distracting. No one's arguing that celebrities don't have the right to speak out, but when they do it so scornfully (and usually unintelligently), it's a real turn-off.

Big Hollywood : Review: No Need to Visit 'Cougar Town'

It's one thing to say the premise of the show doesn't interest you, but I agree with DC Mike in that I'm getting pretty tired of the people who come onto any TV-related thread and issue the general "All TV is crap" comment. There's several in this thread alone. It certainly has a if-you-like-TV-you're-a-moron tone to it, and that's what's irritating. It's not even a comment on the show being discussed. As for Cougar Town, I actually think it's pretty cute. Modern Family is hilarious and even a lttle heartwarmingly cheesy, and The Middle is also very, very good.

Big Hollywood : I’ll Hump You, Man: How Far Will the 'Bromance' Go?

I'm with you. I like, maybe even love, buddy films and male-male friendships and really don't see what's wrong with it just because they gave it a cutesy, eyeroll-worthy name. It's people forming a bond with each other without the romance (except when they play it for laughs) - something I appreciate as a romantic who isn't all that entertained by relationships. This film, yes, takes it to an extreme I don't want to watch, but I don't think it signals some kind of depraved trend (other than "what kind of movie about porn hasn't been done yet?").

Big Hollywood : Reality TV: The End of Shame

Ugh. I actually watch some reality TV, I'll admit, but so much of it has gotten so sleazy, with the flood of Real Housewives and those shows on E! and VH1. There are tons of articles about the Housewives in the magazines of every waiting room, and it kinda depresses me. This is the kind of entertainment people care about? And yet, after being bombarded with headlines, I finally caved in and checked out Jon and Kate Plus Eight last night. Those poor kids. So adorable and normal, but who knows what the show will do to them. I did watch Survivor for the first time this past season, and I gotta say, I actually really liked it. I enjoyed the challenges and thought the contestants were pretty likeable. It was really kind of fun to see the friendship between the young, good ol' southern Alabaman cattle rancher and the geeky, awkward, Jewish man from NYC, especially in the end when J.T. chose to take Stephen to the finale over the easier competition. I don't care how easily manipulated I am, sometimes I just like going along for the ride.

Big Hollywood : 'American Idol': Pre-packaged For Maximum Profit

Heh, yeah, I'll admit to watching American Idol. I don't understand the comment that the contestants were prescreened--isn't that the same as auditioning? Kris Allen, for example, drove to Louisville with his brother and a friend, and all three tried out, barely making the 7,000 (or some such number) cutoff. Kris and his brother made it to the next round, the friend didn't, and then somewhere along the line his brother was cut, too, leaving only Kris to make it to the televised portion of the auditions. Unless I'm a dupe who falls for such stories. Either way, for what it's worth, you can tell from the editing he was never meant to make it to the Top 12. I was rooting for Kris because I like the sound of his voice and his song choices over Adam's, who I admit is talented. Sadly, I don't think the red-state/blue-state debate is over. Instead, it's going to be blamed for Adam's defeat.

Big Hollywood : When Good Googles Go Bad

Not Google related, but when I opened up my browser, I was greeted with this headline from AT&T's home page: President Obama to Spend 100th Day in Spotlight The White House wants you to know that Wednesday is just like any other day. But for those who insist on highlighting President Barack Obama's 100th day in office, the White House will play along. Oh, is that what that press conference tonight is? A favor to all of us clamoring for more Obama airtime? (And if he runs over into Lost's timeslot...)

Big Hollywood : Web 'Superbrain' Predicts 'House' Plot Surprise

Ha, yes, thanks to the internet, Kutner's death was no surprise to me. I kinda wish it had been - it's rare for a TV show to surprise anyone - but it's my own darned fault for looking into spoilers. I do think it's funny, though, they kept his new government job secret until after the show aired.

Big Hollywood : Television's Lame Attack on Guns

Yeah, sometimes I'm a little bit oblivious, but I've never really noticed a strong anti-gun message from House. As far as the suicide goes, I figured they mostly went for the dramatic image, something immediate and shocking - a body laying in a pool of blood. Then again, there was also a House episode a few months back I thought was pretty decent towards religion, but others here (or actually, a site that was linked by here) took it completely differently. Maybe I really am too optimistic when it comes to the intention of the writers. I did recently watch an old rerun of ER, and that was blatantly anti-gun. It was from eight years ago, yet I still wanted to, uh, write a strongly-worded letter.

I didn't watch it, but I did see the ads for it. It looked like they were going to show a hidden camera-type of study, leaving kids alone in a classroom with a gun on the teacher's desk, to show the lure guns have on children. I might be wrong, but I thought that study showed that the kids who went up to play with the gun were the ones who didn't have a gun at home, whereas the ones who did, left the gun alone. That wasn't how they presented it in the commercial, though. Anyone know either way?

Big Hollywood : Trailer: Public Enemies

Definitely looking forward to this. I love the look, and if a Depp-Bale matchup fails to impress, then something went terribly wrong. Even the rest of the cast looks fair-to-promising. I just wish it wasn't Marion Cottilard. And hey, Joe DeVito, playing a guard according to IMDB - is that the same Joe DeVito who's shown up on RedEye a few times? Ha, I might have to keep an eye peeled for him. A few months ago, the Gameshow Network ran an episode of To Tell the Truth where they had to guess which man was the real Melvin Purvis. I loved GSN for reruning those old B&W episodes of gameshows - it's a great look into the past - but for some disappointing reason, they decided to replace them just this month with even more reruns of Family Feud.

Big Hollywood : 'Rescue Me': Another Vapid Actor Breaks the Spell

Unfortunately, this is too true, and happens way too often. It's hard to watch Mark Ruffalo now that I know he's a Truther, and my excitement for Public Enemies dimmed when I saw Marion Cottilard is in it (yet I still like Depp and Bale, go figure). I don't watch Rescue Me, so at least nothing was ruined for me in this case. But whenever I like an actor, I find myself waiting for the other shoe to drop, and I hate it. And the sad thing is, I doubt Rescue Me will lose all that many viewers.

Big Hollywood : Chief Obama Defender Jon Stewart Takes on Breitbart

Couldn't get myself to watch it. Not in the mood for getting angry just yet. Can't believe I used to like the guy. Even worse, I can't believe Stewart has so much influence. Too many people mistake his "punchlines" for truth and his faces for sincerity (rather than arrogance), and that power's made him drunk. Obviously, I can't wait for Breitbart's response. Also, sorry to bring up an annoying question, especially if it's been brought up before, but...Can anyone tell me how I can see all the comments at once, including the replies? All of the sudden - and I don't know if it's an option I accidentally clicked, or if it's a change to the website - I have to click on the "2 Replies" link just to see responses to a comment, whereas before they were all shown, uh, uncollapsed(?). It's really annoying.
