Synthtopia : The PocoPoco Musical Interface

I like their "group" demos. When the colums rise it almost looks organic, like rippling waves. It would be cool to string A LOT of these together.

Synthtopia : Tenori On Performance Tutorial Videos

Hey Lux. I’m using Seth Godin's definition of “remarkable”. I'm not defending it against the latest production tools in any way. Just responding the "utter crap" comment. My point is that it had value, influenced design, and influenced the grid controller movement as a result of its creation. I don’t see a reason for people to “hate” on it because it’s not as relevant today or because it didn’t live up to Yamaha’s hype. Way too expensive – yes. Too much hype and not enough support from Yamaha – yes. It seems to me that the forums are dead because once it shipped, Yamaha clearly stopped thinking about it and I’d imagine Yu Nishibori went back to his day job at Yamaha and Toshio Iwai went back to being an artist. It’s kind of sad they didn’t do more with it – like Access does with the Virus with continuous updates.

Synthtopia : Tenori On Performance Tutorial Videos

Part 2: So did it revolutionize music tech? To keep things in perspective, lets take a look at Tenori-On vs Monome vs another music technology - euphonium. http://bit.ly/ieN6q4 Is Tenori-on "Remarkable"( by Seth Godin's definition "Remarkable = worth making a remark about")? It's an extremely small sample, but this post and the first two comments indicate that this technology - first demonstrated in 2005 and released in 2007 - is in fact still remarkable.

Part 1: Hey kids, lets look at how Tenori-On might have contributed to the grid movement and music technology in general with some groovy analytical interweb tools. Did the Tenori-On influence any other designs? Here is the search for "like a tenori-on" http://bit.ly/jrVlbj Was there any interest in the Tenori-On over the last few years and how does it compare to Monome? http://bit.ly/ieA395 Anyone still talking about or referring to the Tenori-on? http://search.twitter.com/search?q=tenori-on Did the Tenori-on ever make it out of the bedroom and on to the stage with any iconic artist on a major tour? Bjork "Who Is It" (which charted at number 26 in the UK) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dFsHuu0ah_g Did Jonathon Coulton ever use the Tenori-On to play "My Monkey for Wil Wheaton"? Hell yeah - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OK-DOY6Iir0

Synthtopia : Native Instruments Kills Kore Kompletely

I feel for you noisetheorem. They lost me a few years back when they dropped the price of Komplete and did not offer an upgrade path to those of us who bought individual synths. Interesting that they made this move just after reorganizing stock and getting ownership back from investors. I now only own Absynth now (which was my first VST way back), I love Brian Clevinger's vision and work. I'm hoping they support Absynth in their new strategy, or work out a way for Brian to continue to develop it.

Synthtopia : The End Of The World Is Coming. Which Synth Are You Taking With You?

If I was I thought I could make it to a compound with power - Waldorf Blofeld. Metal case could come in handy. I could play while barricading a door for example. If I had to run on batteries, how about a Korg Poly 800. I'm sure I'd be able to find a cassette player in some old civil defense bunker to save and restore patches.

Your right, not obvious - but Nobuyuki Tsujii learns by listening - http://sites.google.com/site/nobufans/home/new1/n... "He plays piano by ear, first listening to a live or recorded version of the piece, memorizing what he hears, and then matching his playing to the score he has memorized"

The latter. I'm humming one of his melodies now from a film I've not seen in 5 years and I couldn't tell you what instruments where in the arrangement :^) I will say that there is extreme value in the division of labor in the process for those who don't record their musical thought in notation form.

"ignores so much performance practice" - I agree, the premise ignores the value of those who can play by ear and have so much performance and produciton experience that they can replicate what they hear in a recording. And by the way, I can't believe I got sucked into this thread - lol.

I'd share the recording. There are plenty of players who can listen to a piece, pick out their part, play it exactly, and or put their own spin on it. I saw blind pianist Nobuyuki Tsujii in Boulder recently who won Van Cliburn – no notation obviously. Again if I had a situation where the player needed notation, I’d create it – but there are cases where it is not required depending on the player.

I personally love Elfman's compositions and think he's quite smart to collaborate with an orchestrator like Boingo guitarist Steve Bartek to translate the score in such a way that it's can be performed by musicians who prefer notation.

"By comparison, audio is a frozen, static record of something that was played once" - um, wrong – things have moved way beyond simple clip launch and into expressive synthesis in real-time with controllerism. This might seem obvious but - notation is relevant if you prefer notation to document your piece or where notation is required play portions of it back. If you don't it's not relevant at all. Obviously music theory and music education is important, but for the art and science of composition it just depends on the composer. When I was doing custom composition and syncing to picture, I would only bother with notation if I had an artist who required it to give me a performance to use in the piece (like a classically trained vocalist). That's just me though. Luckily there is a wide variety of possibilities to accommodate all of us whether it be paper and pencil, or sequencers. Mark

Nice work Miles. I've got an iPhone but have been holding out on iPad. I'm quite happy with my very portable Ableton Live rig so I've been pretty unsatisfied with most scratchpad music apps. I am quite interested in multi-touch from a controllerism angle and have been using it more and more with IPhone to Waldorf Blofeld (as I almost every parm maps to a CC). I'm prefering using the iPhone->MIDI with line 6 MIDI Mobilizer taking away all the headaches of doing it over wireless. Your app looks great and is one of the few apps I've seen that makes me wish I had an iPad.

Synthtopia : Steinberg HALion 4 First Look

I'm more interesetd synthesis, so when I use samples, I use them as original harmonic content and as the source for an oscillator. Ableton Sampler and Camel Audio Alchemy with their no-popu interfaces with sliding panels realy makes for organic workflow. Now I realize that if you are going to reproduce orchestral sounds with realism, you might need a ton of features that are not in Sampler or Alchemy - but man when I got to 1:27 in the video I thought "that is a lot of damn windows". Still, good there some competiton in this space.
