Big Hollywood : We Love Pixar: What I Learned From 'Up'

Great article on _Up_ - which is one of the few movies I'd consider buying. I don't know much about Ed Asner, to be honest, and I've learned not to pay too close attention to celebrities' philosophical or political leanings. If they happen to be good actors whose talent makes a good movie all the more enjoyable, that's all I ask of them - do your job and do it well. That said, learning that Ellen Degeneres did the voice for one of the main fish in _Finding Nemo_ (I forget her character's name, now) kinda spoiled it for me. Sometimes I just don't want to know who does the voices for my favorite kid's-movie characters - just in case.

Yikes! Sorry you had to deal with that. The copy we borrowed from the library fortunately allowed us to skip all the boring and pointless previews and other pre-movie crap (except for the FBI warning, which I can handle; at least it's quiet). Thanks for the heads-up, though. Haven't bought any movies for years.

One of my all-time favorite parts was the argument between Bob and Helen when he came home late, and she criticized him for not being more involved in the life they have now, saying, "I can't believe you don't want to go to your son's graduation!" Bob: "It's not a graduation. He's moving from the fourth grade to the fifth." Helen: "It's a ceremony." Bob: "It's psychotic! They keep coming up with new ways to celebrate mediocrity, ..." Classic--and painfully true.

I don't know much about her, either, but my impression was that she was supposed to be a refreshing alternative to Martha Stewart--sort of an anti-Martha, or something like that. Because, well, she's . . . nice. Or so she seems on TV, anyway.

Big Hollywood : REVIEW: Ridley Scott's 'Robin Hood' Is Plain Ole' Boring

Thanks for reviewing this movie. One of the first things I noticed in the trailer was the shot of Cate Blanchett's Marian pulling her helmet down as she prepares to go to battle with the men--as if we have to have the woman dressed up in armor and doing as the men do in order for her to be compelling or relatable. Please! Bring back the "Maid"--who acts like a lady and knows what real womanhood is all about. It isn't about competition with men but complementarity with them. Too bad the writer/s of this film don't get that.

I'm loving _V_ right now. I watched the 80's mini-series, too, but I have to say I'm enjoying this new one more. It had me hooked after the first episode. Besides _Stargate Universe_ (which is, admittedly not my all-time favorite Stargate series, but still engaging), it's the only show I catch regularly anymore. And you're right about it not really resembling the 80's mini-series. I didn't know there even was a series made after it, but I tried to watch the mini-series again, and I couldn't get through the first half hour. And whether the writer intended this or not, it's easy to see parallels between Anna and Obama. His original intentions for the show, whatever they were, can't make that go away.

I'm sorry. People think SHE'S being selfish??? Because she won't let some geneticist decide whether her next baby is worth saving? Those beautiful boys aren't any less deserving of their parents' love or of the chance to live because of their health condition. God bless the whole family (including the unborn baby #3) and whatever happens, may God keep them all close to Him.

Big Hollywood : Top 5: The Worst Environmentalist Movies Of All Time

I agree the sanctimonious tone of many such movies can be hard to stomach. I haven't seen any of the movies on the above list. I've never had any desire to watch _Fern Gully_ or, for that matter, most of the other movies on the list, as well as many mentioned by commenters. I don't know how in-your-face the environmentalist message will be in "Furry Vengeance." From the trailer, it looks mostly like a fun, slapstick comedy where those intent on eliminating the nature preserve to make room for yet another monument to consumerism and mindless excess are prevented from doing so by the animals who live in the preserve. Can I enjoy the movie even when the animals seem smarter than the humans intent on destroying the preserve? Sure I can. I don't think that makes me an environmentalist wacko. I'm just of the opinion that at least some of our wilderness should be preserved. It's not just a blank canvas waiting to be filled with condos and shopping malls. It has a purpose other than to hide animals we'd rather not see chowing on our pets--or our neighbors-- in our (more or less) neatly kept front yards. As someone else pointed out, many animals thrive in parks carved out of our urban areas. I'm not against that. But manicured city parks aren't the same as patches of untouched wilderness. And I do believe the latter--at least pieces of it throughout the world--ought to be preserved--not just for the animals but for our own sanity.

I've spent plenty of time outdoors. I come from a family of hunters, and I've always enjoyed camping. I never said I think nature is like a big teddy bear with a Mother Goose face. That's why they call it the "wilderness." What I object to is the idea that people should have some sort of blank check for wiping out hunks of that wilderness in the name of big business or another ugly wasteland dedicated to consumerism. I've never objected to people carving out some room for a place to live, and if I have to choose between saving a family of humans and saving a family of raccoons, I'll pick the humans every time. And the movie still looks funny.

I liked Brendan Frasier in the two Mummy movies i saw (I didn't see the last one), _George of the Jungle_, and the recent re-make of _Journey to the Center of the Earth_. Honestly, _Furry Vengeance_ looks funny, and I'll probably watch it when it comes out on DVD (can't afford to watch it in the theater). I don't see what's so outrageous about the idea of nature punishing those who want to destroy natural beauty to make room for another shopping mall (a wasteland with walls). Real animals, of course, aren't as smart as the ones in this movie. If they were, it wouldn't be a comedy but a documentary. Lighten up, folks.

Thank you! I thought the trailer was a hoot. And I don't think Brendan Fraser is hurting himself by playing the lead character. I think he'll do a great job, and I'd a thousand times rather watch him in a good slapstick comedy than a vast number of other big-ticket Hollywood actors who take themselves and their opinions way too seriously.

Big Hollywood : My Top 10 Least Anticipated Movies for 2010

I'm actually curious about the Alice in Wonderland remake. I wasn't enthralled, to be honest, with Disney's cartoon movie based on it, and I'm willing to give Tim Burton's take a chance. Ditto with the A-Team re-make. I watched the trailer and would like to see it just to see how well the new actors portray the characters I watched growing up. Most of the other movies on your list do look like a big yawn, though I might give Karate Kid a glance. There's nothing sacred about the Ralph Macchio version, and I don't mind someone's attempting a re-make, if they do it well. Will Smith's son may do just as well in that role--and maybe better. The plot of the movie isn't all that interesting to me (at least not right now), so I don't know when I'll be checking it out from the library. Won't be spending any money on any of the movies on your list, though, so I'm with you there. :) Have library card--will use it.
