Stuff Christians Like - Jon Acuff : Iffy Prayer Requests

Tiredofchurch and Me!, I get where you're coming from. I was in a similar spot recently (have not entirely gotten over that hump, actually). But what is helping me to begin to move past that and start going to church more regularly is the fact that you won't find perfect people in church, or anywhere else for that matter. Like my pastor jokes often, if he hears someone complain that the church is full of hypocrites, his first response is, "At least you'll have company." Let's face it: we're probably all guilty of doing the same things we expect others in church to not do. We're all just a bunch of people who've messed up (and continue to mess up), with Jesus being our only leg to stand on. So is it worth it to me to go to church and deal with all that stuff? Yes, because, ultimately, I'm not going for the people. I'm going for God. Besides, they have to deal with my imperfections too, so I figure we're all even :-) And the fact that God still shows up when we worship Him in the midst of all our imperfections is a beautiful, awe-inspiring thing.

It human nature to want what we can't have. The rules make those things forbidden, thereby making (some of) them seem more enticing to us. Or maybe that's just me :-)

When you put it this way, I guess there are quite a few people who've been "married" lots of times. And possibly without even getting properly divorced between "marriages". Hmm, does this mean we have a society of bigamists (and polypolygamists?) running around?? But I digress...

LOL!! This reminds me of an African story I heard where, to keep young people from engaging in the friskies, they were told that the quickest way to get pregnant was for the girl to drink from the same glass as the guy.

I'm not sure that diminishes the cross so much as it diminishes our testimony. It can come across as a "do what I say not what I do" matter, which turns people off completely or makes them want to burn all Christians at the stake.

I think God does care what you watch or read or spend time doing. Also, I think the things you spend your time doing (reading, watching, etc) affect/help shape the person you are.

One could also argue that non-Christian movies also serve their own agendas. They promote promiscuity and violence, among other things. It's hard for anyone (Christian or otherwise) to do anything that's truly altruistic and does not serve their own agenda - and that includes making movies.

Stuff Christians Like - Jon Acuff : Fearing we'll out sin grace.

Well said, Jon. As a repeat offender myself, I have to admit there are times when I've felt like I'm still at the beginning of my walk with God, still doing the same things I should be long past, after being a Christian all these years. God is gracious and will continue to forgive when we confess our sins to Him. But, is it possible that, by being a repeat offender, I am spending time traveling the same route when God is patiently waiting to show me amazing new roads and places to travel? Is it possible that, by going back to my own vomit, I am filling myself with the same old, same old, when God wants me to taste the splendid feasts and desserts He has in store for me? Yes, He is patient and He will continue to forgive... But is it possible that, with a little more discipline on my part and His grace and strength (and sooner, rather than later), I can move past the old me and into the new me He knows I can be? I may be asking questions you have already addressed in your post, but if there are any you have more answers to, or wish to expand on, I'm all ears (eyes?)!
