Simple Makes : Sort Recipes

Good question (and I like your post, too):

I'll go into more detail in step 6, "Go Shopping," but basically though I meal plan for two weeks in advance, and make my shopping list only that often, I go to the store more frequently.

I live in walking distance of a farmer's market, so I'm able to buy fruits and veggies twice a week. We either buy meat weekly or freeze what we won't use that week. Other things, though, like flour, tomato paste, oats, jelly, rice, milk powder, baking powder and soda, vinegar, soy sauce... and more, I just buy as needed the weekend after I choose my meal plan. We don't have a vehicle, and this way I never need to buy more than what I can carry walking home.

Simple Makes : Select Recipes

The Artisan Bread in Five method is supposed to be really flexible with yeast; you can even put the dough in the refrigerator to rise slowly, overnight. I live in rural China where our yeast isn't as high-quality as what people in the U.S. use, so I do everything they say BUT I microwave my water for 30 seconds first, add the yeast into it, and let it stand while I mix the flour with the salt and whatever other ingredients. It works fine for me, and I don't have to buy expensive imported yeast like many other expats here who bake but find that the local yeast won't rise. Let me know whether this helps... :)

Thanks, Heidi! All the photos are Creative Commons on Flickr.com. There are some very talented people there!

Lemon pie for breakfast actually sounds really good, even though it may not be as healthy as multigrain bread with fruit and cheese. Hehe. I aim for healthy eating 80% of the time... it's not too overwhelming that way :-)

Great (mouthwatering!) ideas, everyone! I'm kind of a recipe gal when it comes to a recipe for the first time, so let me know if anyone has them for the foods that have been mentioned: * granola * quiche * angel food cake (for from-scratch strawberry shortcake) * keep the smoothie recipes coming!
