Big Government : Thursday Open Thread: Imperial Edition

To Paraphrase: Liberty is rarely lost all at once. It is lost in increments, often without the victim even noticing, because the theft is wrapped a confection of compassion. I suppose this could be the end of Advice and Consent. Article II really is just inconvenient, after all. So why not just disband the senate while we are at it? Lazy Jack

Big Government : A Regulation That's Right: Bring Back Glass-Steagall

The vote on Repeal of Glass Steagall: The final bill resolving the differences was passed in the Senate 90–8 (one not voting) and in the House: 362–57 (15 not voting). B.Clinton Signed it. While I agree it was not Gramm's Shining moment, there was clearly bipartisan insanity going on, with Clinton and the Democrats happily leading the chorus. Repeal clearly supported the progressive agenda, with the predictable results we see today.
Big Journalism : NBC's Chuck Todd Admonishes Andrea Mitchell's Attempt to Race-Bait Rick Perry

Maybe Perry just misses Brother Love, the once great manager of the Undertaker in Vince McMahon's unforgettable World Wrestling Federation. I know I do. As for the topic, I love how the only people who seem to notice and discuss Cain's color are the same people who purport to be color blind. Andrea Mitchell, Spike Lee, Lawrence O'donnell, Chris Matthews, Jeff Spicoli (aka Mr. Penn), et. al. obviously cannot see past a person's skin color while they are lecturing the rest of us. Unsurprising, but still pathetic. Lazy Jack

Big Government : Time for Some Truth: Bill Clinton NEVER Balanced A Budget And NEVER Ran A Surplus

Jeff, Thanks for the analysis. However, the Josef Goebbels playbook makes me conclude that in fact, the opposite of your analysis is true.
Big Government : Friends and Family Abound in 'Green' Stimulus': Coincidence, or Cronyism?

I hate to admit it, but I now understand why Elizabeth Warren's prurient comment the other day was nearly correct, with the following amendments. She said: There is nobody in this country who got rich on his own. Nobody. You built a factory out there — good for you! You moved your goods to market on the roads the rest of us paid for. You hired workers the rest of us paid to educate. You were safe in your factory because of police forces and fire forces that the rest of us paid for. To be more accurate, she should have said; There is “no friend or relative of Nancy Pelosi or Barack Obama” in this country who got rich on his own. You built that factory with taxpayer money we threw away on you. You spent $700 million to create 45 permanent jobs. Good for you! In this context she is certainly right. Thanks Elizabeth, for the clarification.
Big Journalism : Don't Blame ObamaCare: 'NBC Nightly News' Freaks Out Over Rise In Health Costs

If memory serves, prior to the Patient Protection act, the combined governments within the republic already subsidised nearly half the total healthcare tab annually. Finding ways to ignore the distortionary effects of all that state funding is a full time effort by the U.S. media and her co-propagandists in academia and lobbying. But hey, why not double down on eighty years of bad bets. Some other interesting nuggets ignored by the media: http://thanksforthelaughs.wordpress.com/2009/11/0... Lazy Jack

Big Government : Obama Administration: Lost in Space

Though a supportor of private space enterprise, the loss of the U.S. manned space program is a national tragedy. Why? Because this bit of American exceptionalism delivered economic, educational, and societal benefits that demonstrated our exceptionalism. It demonstrated a vision beyond just the dole. Let two speakers define the difference in eras: Let both sides seek to invoke the wonders of science instead of its terrors. Together let us explore the stars, conquer the deserts, eradicate disease, tap the ocean depths, and encourage the arts and commerce. John F. Kennedy We need to internalize this idea of excellence. Not many folks spend a lot of time trying to be excellent. Barack Obama Tragicomic.
Big Government : To Be Fair, Obama’s Responsibility for the Downgrade Is only 15 Percent

Spot on. The steady accretion of entitlement liabilities began with FDR, and were only temporarily cured in the 40's- Not by the war, of course, but by the rebuilding afterward when the US was the only nation left with anything resembling a manufacturing infrastructure. It should be noted, though, that Obama, because of his intellectual handicap (he was indoctrinated in a soup of socialist claptrap, after all) has through his inaction allowed the debt and unfunded liabilites to fully metastisize. Hence, the debt to GDP will increase from 72% of GDP in 2008 to over 105% by 2012. Bush, in eight years, went from 54% to 72%. Obama is not solely responsible, but his neglect is more damnable.
Using Lincoln's bible was a proper calculation, but was it sincere, or the obvious political window dressing? Reading Goodwin's book does not qualify one as a student of the man. We should let Obama's actions and words (as noted above) speak for themselves on this score.

Nice to know how the modern left view of Abe, from our Dear Leader to many of those on this thread: I cannot swallow whole the view of Lincoln as the Great Emancipator. Barack Obama Did Abe, or did he not, put a check mark in the W column with the Emancipation Proclamation? Did he, or did he not, spend our blood, both black and white, ending slavery? Parse that history all you want, but the outcome remains the same. The win may have been ugly, but it was a win. To say less belittles the achievement of the hundreds of thousands dead and wounded in Abe’s crusade. Lazy Jack
