I don't know i think they can, its not like there is comercial gain from it since neither party make money from this (i dont know). But i imagine the reason dev team dont just copy other peoples jailbreak/unlock code is that they probably have some leads on another way to do it. I we want to continue having JBs and unlocks then we need different ways to do it and so we need different parties to work on finding those ways. say apple patches the exploit up, we are back to square 1 unless dev finds another way. just my 2 cent.

Right my plan is to update to 3.1.2 FW and baseband 5.11.07 using itunes, since i have a legit sim it should be fine. Then if everything works fine I might consider using blackra1n to JB it. (since i dont need unlock, but if i did i could just use blacksn0w) I will let you know what happens.

Ye its definitely worth the upgrade, cant install half the new apps on 2.2. i have a bit more info to add to this. I dont need an unlock since im running a contract with O2 so its all legit. I did follow the pwnagetool tutorial on iClarified to make a custom ispw 3.1.2 and then JB my 3G. I now have 2 options following you great replies: 1. restore to 3.1.2 in itunes (will this upgrade my baseband to 5.11?) then JB with the same ispw file i made with pwnagetool. 2. create a custom 3.0.1 ispw and JB with pwnage tool. What exactly does ultrasn0w do? i thought that was unlock, so i dont need to do it since i dont need an unlock right? You are right about te blacksn0w option, too many problems, its my last resort. Great replies guys i knew i could count on you. :D

Im a little confused, im wondering if you could help me. For part 4 did you alt/option click restore on itunes and select and "unpwned" 3.1.2 ispw? Was this to get the baseband update to 5.11.07? then part 6 you did the same alt/option click restore but with the custom 3.1.2 ispw from pwnagetool to get the jailbreak? Im guessing you have no problems with the baseband. I just did everything you just said without part 4. So my baseband was not upgrade to 5.11.07 it is still on 2.28.00 from version 2.2 :P unfortunately my O2 carrier isnt showing up, cant get any signal in the middle of the city. Phone says "waiting for activation" Any help from this great community would be appreciated (EDIT: iphone 3G btw, serial number 828373xxxxx. and yes i have tried turning 3G off, turning network settings off, taking sim out, restarting phone, syncing 1000 times etc.. :P)
