Big Peace : Obama: Soldiers in Afghanistan Must Be Fired Upon to Receive Combat Pay

Exactly - that's why people ANYWHERE in Afghanistan will still get hostile fire/imminent danger pay. The ONLY change is you have to be there for a full month to get the FULL month's pay.

Relax, the change here is you will not receive combat/imminent danger pay for the whole month if you spend a day or two in a combat zone vice receiving a whole month's pay for spending a small amount of time there. I didn't research to see if it's pro-rated, however. People pop in and out of combat zones for various 'reasons' and stay one day and get the whole month's worth of pay. That ticks grunts off to no end. This will also save money by stopping some trips altogether. Now, I wonder if they will come after the tax-exempt status next (you stay a day you get the whole month tax-free).

I heard from a friend this is a good movie... I take exception with the Kevin Costner comment... Tin Cup was a pretty good movie! But then, I don't know enough about golf to say whether he looked authentic in the movie.

Big Peace : Photo: Mysterious 'Arab Graffiti' Appears On Underbelly of Southwest Airline Planes

Whoever took the picture missed the boat - that symbol doesn't appear to be an Arabic letter, it looks like a hammer and sickle. All kidding aside, I can make out what looks like Arabic script in the lower left hand corner of the picture. The writing is too small to make out. It does appear to have the diacritical markings, tho (the markings that tell you whether to use the short ah, ee, or oo sound after each letter). This would hint that it's a copy of a Quranic verse. Still, the writing is too small to make out. Again - the writing is in the lower left. The other is a symbol I don't recognize.

Big Peace : Let's Be Honest: We've Lost In Both Iraq And Afghanistan

One measure of success in Iraq can be seen in the 'Iraq Index' over at Brookings&lt; <a href="http://;http://www.brookings.edu/~/media/Files/Centers/Saban/Iraq%20Index/index.pdf&gt;" target="_blank">;http://www.brookings.edu/~/media/Files/Centers/Saban/Iraq%20Index/index.pdf&gt;. By many, many, indicators Iraq has turned around. In Afghanistan, there are many positive things to point at (number of deaths, deaths by IED are down, women's freedoms, the ANA and ANP have made great strides) however, it's difficult to say 'success' if we have a narrow view of what is happening. Sure, the Taliban was able to pull of an attack in Kabul. But, attacks in Kabul are very rare (I was there from Oct 2009 to April 2010, in the very area this attack took place, there were 3 attacks while I was there). While it is a small victory for the taliban that they were able to pull of this attack; the reaction of the ANA and ANP seems to have been decent. In the end, all attackers were killed, only 11 Afghans died (the attackers were stopped from exploding a car bomb they had nearby because of the security response). Admittedly, the Afghan Nat'l Sec Forces had help from NATO, but they are learning. To be honest, I'm surprised there aren't more attacks - there are many places to hid in Kabul. And, only Afghans were manning traffic security points so they must be doing something right.
