I had the privilege of attending the Ivins-Kristol debate in Portland a few years back. It never ceases to amaze me how people can live in a reality solely of their own choosing and completely disconnected from the empirical evidence around them. Ivins did a great job of explaining the facts of life to the audience but you cannot make someone listen if he chooses not to hear.

Sounds like you are raising L. to be a very informed person and to be an excellent writer. I know from where both of those qualities emanate.
