Yes, where is Katha Pollitt when we need her? “I hear you. but I am really tired of defending the indefensible. The people who attacked Clinton on Monica were prissy and ridiculous, but let me tell you it was no fun, as a feminist and a woman, waving aside as politically irrelevant and part of the vast rightwing conspiracy Paula, Monica, Kathleen, Juanita,” [The Nation's Katha] Pollitt said. Media whores.
It suits Barbara Walters, regardless. She, along with Cronkite and Teddy Kennedy, is a raging Communist [language warning at link]: "Furthermore, Kennedy approached the Soviets with an offer to help undermine Ronald Reagan’s 1984 presidential reelection campaign. Kennedy proposed a public relations blitz and mentioned his friends — Walter Cronkite and Barbara Walters, by name — as willing to assist in the propaganda effort."

Big Hollywood : Leave Ellen Alone: 'Family Group' Protests JCPenney for Hiring DeGeneres

Er. . ." marriage" is a sacrament of the Church. Why the State feels they have to recognize it is beyond me. Social contracts and civil unions are recognized by the State. Marriage is the church's purview. There is no issue here except Gay Activism, which is disingenuous in its umbrage. They do not want equality of social status, they want to dominate the culture and demand that others bow the knee to their power-play. Other social issues you outline actually are civil rights issues. Marriage is not. Mexico has a true separation of Church and State in this matter. The State does not officially recognize anything the Church institutes as binding in a court of law. That is how it should be. Might as well have the State sanction Baptism or Priesthood. Oh, wait . . .

Big Hollywood : The Hypocrisy of Hollywood's Whitney Houston Sorrow

As if there isn't a cultural glorification of drugs within the entertainment community. As if there isn't a subculture of abuse and ostracism aimed at those who escape the stereotype. As if there isn't a complete disdain for all things religious, and especially for Ms. Houston's traditional upbringing. As if a mocking of religion the likes of which we haven't seen since Madonna needed attention, didn't attend the Grammy's alongside all the professional mourners. THAT is the hypocrisy. Ms. Houston's failings are her own, and her judge is the Living God. Those who remain to mourn her passing must live with their own conscience, their own tacit approval of an abusive culture, their own silence in the face of so much pain caused by their coked-up example as something to admire.

Cocaine is a one-way trip to Hell. Most drug counselors will only quietly admit that the success rate for kicking crack is disheartening. The only treatment is to never, ever, use it. The same people who glorify it in song and movie and culture now show up to mourn the fruit of their indulgences. That is what is hypocritical.

Regardless of your personal disdain for Shapiro, the hypocrisy charge he levels at Ms. Houston's peers stands pretty firmly. Houston herself was vilified for not being "black enough," in her vocal stylings. They criticized her for being a pop singer. Then, when she proved her "black cred" by succumbing to the enormous pressure to fail in her personal integrity, they walked away. We never heard, nor will we hear, the monolithic black purists ever call out or upbraid anyone for a personal failure. They close ranks and excuse it away, thus reinforcing the negative. You may be the Rock of Gibraltar in your own estimation of your moral rectitude. A regular Island of a Man, needing nothing. The rest of us have all been set within a community of people with whom we must dwell, share with, and care for. That Ms. Houston's shallow set of "friends" too late proclaim such religious concern and care for her is what is so hypocritical. That she is the person most responsible for her sad choices is not in dispute. I know a greater pain within my own family than your personal anecdote. It does not apply to Mr. Shapiro's essay any more than does yours. May she rest in peace. May you find your own peace, and help those within your power to influence reach it, too.

Big Government : Do U.S. Corporations Pay Their 'Fair Share?'

. Please explain to me how corporations, with a commodity or service to sell to the consumer, actually pay any taxes? Sure, they fork over money to the USG, but it doesn't cost them a cent that they don't pass along to the consumer. Hidden taxes on the consumer. Add it up, people. Your tax rate isn't what you send in the Uncle Sam. It's much more.

A nit to pick: Canaries in the coal mine don't sing out a warning. They die. That's the warning. Inasmuch as AB is "taking one for the team" by being on the front lines, I'd say it's why they're trying to kill his reputation and his influence.
. The Left , the Proggies, had no other means of getting rid of their useful idiots once their usefulness is spent or their image is compromised. That was then. After spending two Kennedys' lives, they had incrementally moved our moral compass far enough off course that Teddy was allowed to live his lascivious lifestyle pretty much out in the open. He saved his own life twice. Once, while supposedly escaping a sunken vehicle, and secondly by getting away with murder. Lucky Teddy. He became the Lion of the Senate. And conferred his blessing on Barry.

Big Hollywood : The Politics of 'Star Trek': 'Patterns of Force'

If you will take the pains to re-read Mr. Price's essay, and the point of it, I believe you will note that this is not a discussion of good v. evil, but the inherent problems of concentrating power. I have no doubt that Mr. Cheney acted in a way that he felt would best protect us from our enemies. He took fully the constitutional position that the Executive Branch, thus the President, was the Chief Law Enforcement Officer. He worked pretty hard to restore power to the Presidency. I posit that the "concentration of power," to use Mr. Price's premise, has led us to a similar predicament now, with a President who does not have our best interest at heart. If nothing else, check out the shorthand version of Cheney's policy formulation on Wikipedia. It behooves us, as thinking Americans, to rightly judge our actions, and not just "root for our guy!" This takes a sobriety that doesn't translate well into soundbites and tweets and SNL skits. Nor does it lend itself to frothy forums. But Andrew's piece here is quite thought-provoking. And so, mine were provoked. Hopefully, yours will be as well.

*mwuah!* How sweet of you to say so, Dale. I've had this moniker since the year 2000. I cut my teeth on the political forums of that time and learned to duke it out with much better minds than my own. I learned, and still learn, so much from engaging in good debate. There is sadly little of it on most red-meat forums, but Andrew Price is always a breath of fresh air, no matter what he's talking about. And he's always a gentleman. :o)
