Big Hollywood : Television and Gun Accuracy Don't Mix

Actually, I think you might be misinterpreting that sentence. Michael making that distinction was supposed to be a clarification, but Gilroy's blase rejection of the difference just served to highlight the fact that the character simply didn't care. Besides, I don't think have the sociopathic Gilroy endorse that line of thinking serves as a real big plus for the equation of white supremacists with the right wing.

Big Hollywood : The Way You Wear Your Hat - Listen Up, Hollywood, It's Important

I can't believe people have gotten this far without expressing a general sort of horror and scarring about the big-bearded dude in the short shorts from the 70s. Oh God, why did my morning have to begin with THAT? Otherwise, great article.

Big Hollywood : Hollywood and I: Both Wrong About Michael Jackson

No kidding. I find their arguments interesting, if only for their denial of suspicious behavior and circumstances. Regardless of the pro/anti stance, he certainly doesn't look clean from any stand point. Some of them even sound like the same person wrote them on different screen names. Didn't realize MJ was THAT controversial.

Big Hollywood : Review: ‘District 9’--An Alien Internment Camp?

Quote from an interview on Salon (Link = http://www.salon.com/ent/movies/btm/feature/2009/... "There's no message, per se, that I'm trying to get across with the movie. It's rather that I want to present science fiction, and put it in the environment that affected me. In the process, maybe I highlight all the topics that interest me, but I'm not giving any answers. You can take from it what you will."

Err...might want to watch the film. It's far from PC-101, in fact, nearly every character (including the aliens) in this film is an unqualified bastard. As many have said on here already, it takes shots at everyone. Doesn't mean there aren't legitimate criticisms of the film, but that it's politically correct drivel is not one of them.

Err...I'm not entirely sure we watched the same movie. First, I acknowledge that MNU was the bad guy. But I think it's a huge leap to say that Blomkamp was attacking MNU (whose forces had lots of light blue helmets and armbands, lets not forget) because it's a corporation; MNU was doing lots of unethical things, for which it deserved, rightfully, to be condemned. That link was never made in the film, nor at any point by any of the in-film commentators. MNU has some 'good' guys, and lots of bad, but no one in this film gets away clean. I don't think that's a legitimate criticism of the film, of which I admit there are a few.

In actuality, after seeing the movie, I'm not even sure that apartheid is an entirely appropriate metaphor for the film. Obviously there are elements of it, the shanty towns, etc. But it doesn't play a huge role in the story for the most part. I didn't think it was terribly propagandistic at all. I mean obviously there's the bad PMC and corporation, but it's not a generalized attack on all PMCs and all corporations. Certainly not leftist agit-prop, but not exactly conservative film making.

Wow, you're really good at reading in between the lines there, Mr. Dissident. Chill out, all I was trying to say is let's not jump on the "OMG LEFTIST ANTI-AMERICAN!!!11!11" train before the movie comes out. It may well be, but it's also a movie made by a South African in South Africa about an artistic metaphor for the South African apartheid. Maybe this might not all be about America? I will admit I don't have high hopes for the movie as a conservative piece du resistance, but who knows? Maybe Mr. Blomkamp will have something interesting to say.

Interestingly enough, at least in this trailer and the short film Alive in Joburg on which this full-length feature is based, black South Africans are featured prominently in support of the alien apartheid.

Good point. I guess I was trying to say to be careful to criticize the film for what it's actually saying, rather than just attacking it because of assumed anti-American bias. But I have some hope for the film, everything Blomkamp's done that I've seen has been pretty incredible, particularly the inspiration for this film, Alive in Joburg and Yellow about artificial intelligence on the run from Mossad. Now, as for a "We're such bastards" movie, how about James Cameron's Avatar heh?

To be fair, it's more likely to be an attack on the South African history than American history, because this is basically a South African with Peter Jackson and a Hollywood budget.

Big Hollywood : 'Monk': The Show That Started a Brighter Television Trend Returns

They have done something similar to that, though just in commercials. They have various characters from the USA series like Sam Axe and Shawn give little riffs about Monk in their own style, they are great. USA is superior to NBC as far as I'm concerned, now that Kings and Life are canceled.

Big Hollywood : The Day After: My First Impression of Sarah Palin

I'd like to chalk it up to sheer uniformity of Palin's portrayal within the MSM, but I'm not really sure that it is significant enough. To be frank, I'm not entirely sure why. Some have different reasons than others, but in the end I don't understand. I really don't, which is what frightens and saddens me the most about this whole affair.

Big Hollywood : The Day After: My First Impression of Sarah Palin

If anything, I am of two minds about the Governor Palin. One part of me says that it's a good thing she resigned, she's been turned into a caricature of a caricature, to the point where even reasonably well-informed friends of mine think she's a idiot redneck hick, which is patently untrue. I will grant she doesn't know everything about everything, but who does? She is remarkably knowledgeable about the subjects she needs to be. She's a wife and a mother, whose children have been put through the wringer by a bunch of classless fiends. Her eldest son is in Iraq, her eldest daughter had the father of her child leave her, and her youngest son has Down's. That's enough of a challenge for a stay-at-home mom with a supportive father. But to do all that while governor of the largest state in America, while running of national office? The list of people who could do all of that effectively is pretty small I imagine. This part of me says that for the good of her family, who thanks to frivolous ethics complaints and lawsuits is now over half a million dollars in debt, she should just disappear from the national stage, and live her life again. She's done enough, and suffered enough for multiple lifetimes politically. Can't we find someone else who has less to lose to serve as a charismatic conservative spokesman? The other part of me says though that this is surrender to ruthless, classless, shameless fools and fiends who destroyed a mother, a wife and a governor all for perceived political gain. It was an inhuman thing to do to a person who by all accounts is one of the most decent and caring politicians in America, who has done more for her state than anyone currently in state government across the nation. To give in to these pigs would be unworthy of her, and of the movement she has come to represent. If anything, those of us who count ourselves as decent human beings, regardless of political affiliation need to stand up and defend her reputation against baseless and coarse attacks on her character and those of her children. We ought not enforce a political career on her she does not want, but we should defend her, work for her, honor her example and if she does run for future office, vote for her.
