religion sucketh : se7en

It basically boils down to closed hand/open hand theology. While Driscoll & Warren, and Piper & Warren may have severe disagreements on open hand issues (e.g. exegetical preaching), they agree on the fundamentals - the Trinity, the gospel, virgin birth, Heaven and Hell, etc. At least that\\\'s the impression I get.

Since Driscoll is a moderator this time around, his primary role will be to keep everyone else in line. I\\\'m particularly interested in this session of the Elephant Room, just to hear what Jakes says and if, or even how, it lines up with scripture. I see Driscoll leaving any rebuttal to whomever is sitting across from Jakes.

religion sucketh : One Christian's Thoughts on Gay Marriage

P.S. Matt Chandler of The Village Church in Dallas, TX held an excellent Q&A on the subject of homosexuality as part of their Culture and Theology series last year, which can be viewed by visiting the link below. The video lasts a little over 37 minutes. http://vimeo.com/12110166

religion sucketh : One Christian's Thoughts on Gay Marriage

I realized after re-reading my post this afternoon that I left something out. While I don't condone gay marriage (or homosexuality), I don't believe legislation is the answer. To use abortion as an example, pro-life activists have spent millions, if not billions, in attempts to use the law to decrease, and eventually end, abortion. However, thousands of abortions still occur daily. And while abortions have slowly began to decrease recently, it's likely due to improvements in technologies such as ultrasound, not the result of legislation. My point is, while my faith plays a large role in how I vote (as it should for every Christian), I don't believe legislating morality is the answer. Amending the constitution to prevent gay marriage won't stop gays from being gay.

religion sucketh : Test Drive

Thanks! If you hadn't left a comment I don't know how long it would've been before I noticed. I tried Safari, Chrome and Firefox and it looked the same (screwed up) in all three. Deactivated the last plugin to be updated and that fixed everything, so things should be back to normal.

religion sucketh : On Earth As It Is In Heaven

Very true; Bell does tend to ask a lot of questions without providing much in the way of a payoff in the end. I know he uses questions to steer his readers in a certain direction and hopes they come to the "right" conclusions, but it can be frustrating at times to keep reading question after question and not get much of an answer. I've never read anything from Wright, but I do see a lot of John Stott's influence upon Bell, and maybe even a little Francis Schaffer. I just thought it was hilarious how Bell was able to take questions that I've asked over the years and sum it all up in one statement.

religion sucketh : Motorcycle Clubs, Zakk Wylde and Ridiculousness

From Wikipedia: "The primary visual identification of a member of an outlaw motorcycle club is the vest adorned with a large club-specific patch or patches, predominantly located in the middle of the back. The patch(es) will contain a club logo, the name of the club, and the letters MC, and a possible state, province, or other chapter identification. This garment and the patches themselves are referred to as the colors or cut (a term taken from the early practice of cutting the collars and/or sleeves from a denim or leather jacket)." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Outlaw_motorcycle_cl... Now, if you're talking about how the Hells Angels colors are red and white, or how the Mongols colors are black and white, then I agree - the colors on the patch are the club colors. But every time I hear bikers talk about their "colors", they're talking specifically about the vest and anything else they own with the club logo and rockers, not the dyes used on the patches themselves. That's what I was getting at, since the SSMC didn't have a problem with the color of Black Label merchandise, but just the three-piece patch design used.

Shaun in the City : 9 White Folk Away from Being a Black Church...

You took the words right out of my mouth. It's one thing if a person doesn't like the music, preaching style, etc., because God made us all different. For example, I'm not really a fan of southern gospel, so if I visited a church where that was their primary musical direction, I probably wouldn't return, and that's okay. But it's a different story altogether if someone chooses not to return because of race issues. Like you said, we're all going to be together in Heaven, so we'd better get used to it.

I checked out the AFTAH website and they come across as a "hate the sin, not the sinner" group, but then they drag the sinners through the mud, which defeats the "hate the sin, not the sinner" approach. I'm really over the whole "gay agenda" BS; it's as if some of the more influential evangelicals want us to believe there is an equally influential drag queen sitting in a club in San Francisco, plotting the takeover of the U.S. As for all of Christendom being a hate group because of scriptures which teach against homosexuality, I believe all sin is a perversion of God's original created order, so as far as I'm concerned, a homosexual is no more perverted than a fornicator.

religion sucketh : se7en

Disclaimer (not for John, but for other readers): No, I don't have any children. Yes, I know I'll feel differently when I do. Yes, I'm an idealist, etc., etc., etc. Now, onto your comment. I wouldn't say everyone who chooses not to spank is blinded, or is ignoring their child's disobedience - some have found other methods of punishment that work better for them. And I do like that Matthew's post isn't anti-spanking, but instead is simply, "this is what works for us". Matthew and his wife may eventually have a second child and find that with that one, spanking works better than other methods. I think that is one of the problems - many people still believe that discipline is a "one size fits all" thing, when it isn't. Matthew mirrors my childhood in his post. Spanking didn't deter me from doing wrong; it only made me better at not getting caught. By the time I was 7 or 8, it didn't even hurt, so my mother was forced to find other ways of punishing me. And that's when she also began to realize that it would be better if she made me realize I was being punished not because I got caught, but because I had been disobedient. That being said, I do not believe spanking (in general) is wrong. But I don't believe it works with every child. But you nailed it in your summary: the child needs to know exactly what they did to deserve punishment, and the parents need to be active in their child's life and consistent. That was one of the biggest problems I saw in parents when I worked at CCS - inconsistency. Both in the life of their child, and in discipline.
